The Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park is a lushly long-term, large-scale aquatic research facility located along the northern edge of The Ohio State University’s Columbus campus. I had a great time here with some Ohio University students doing a research. It's a gateway to research, teaching and outreach related to water resources at the university. The Schiermeier Wetlands pursue basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization, from microbes to ecosystems to landscapes. Our experimental wetlands can be viewed from the Sandefur Observation Pavillion which is open to the public. Additional viewing opportunities of the natural areas are available along the Olentangy Greenways Trail and paved paths throughout the site. Read moreThis place is great and they have a new building.much of the wetlands has been covered up by the surrounding honeysuckle invasion. It honestly makes no sense to me why the wetlands which is supposed to be highlighting the specialness of it is so covered up plus OSU has so many volunteer groups that would easily come in and mitigate this problem for them. I wish this would happen and it would allow visitors to see more of what's going on within the wetlands. The lookout tower is also not really good anymore because the wetlands have grown up so much so maybe considering the new tower to climb in order to seed progress within the wetlands and do more...
Read moreNot a bad place for an evening walk but not much here. This place is tucked away near campus. There is a swamp/pond area with boardwalks but it was closed off to the public. Theres a nature center that was also closed when we went. Their trail connects to the Olentangy trail which is nice. We did see some deer, groundhogs, many birds, and a beaver! Caution if you walk near the swamp area, you will get eaten alive by mosquitos and...
