Disappointed with the treatment and service from the owner towards my boyfriend. He went in and ordered his usual plate without looking at the menu. We frequently visit this restaurant 1-2x a month. When he received his food, he experienced an unusual smell followed by a strange taste. This was different from what he has tased before. Without being too concerned he season his meat with his favorite sauce and continued to eat. As he ate the smell and taste became too prominent and he began to examin the meat; chicken and steak. He mentioned to the waiter that the meat seemed tough, dry and had a strange smell and taste. The chicken was fine but the steak had two different textures; one fresh and the other dry. The owner came out and argued that they always use “fresh ingredients” and told my boyfriend to “put down his plate and leave.” My boyfriend even tried to reason and be understanding with the owner but he wouldn’t hear it. This is the worst act of customer service I have ever heard. It is known sometimes to save money that restaurants mix old and new meat. We think this was the case and why his food tasted “off” but we will unfortunately no longer be supporting this business due to the owners lack of hospitality and understanding. As a business manager myself I am trained that the customer is always right. I am in the service industry. Things can’t be perfect all the time and we sometimes have to acknowledge that, whether we want to or not. I truly hope this does not happen to anyone else and that the manager can further educate himself on customer service.
To customers reading and the owner IN RESPONSE: Your reply to my review is a prime example of your attitude, especially in your opening line to me... "FIRST OF ALL...". To clarify your story, my boyfriend did not walk out without paying. The manager told him to put down his plate and leave. He was abrasive and argumentative. My boyfriend was not upset about not being able to sit at a 4-top table, which was the only thing available at the time. He is incredible thoughtful and respectful which comes from his Japanese background. My boyfriend even asked his waiter named "JAY" If it was okay for him to be at a four-person table because he didn't want to take up space for other guests. Jay said he was fine and it wasn't a problem. He was never moved to a 2-top table. Thank you for taking the time to twist this complaint to your benefit. Bad customer service has a way of revealing itself whether you want to acknowledge your behavior or not, It will happen again to someone else. I believe in Karma. The next person may not be kind enough to write a google review but post a food critic column in a magazine,...
Read moreHorrible Experience!!!!!!!! My mom and I came here to get take-out for dinner. I ordered the shrimp and veggie plate with corn and macaroni salad. I got the stir fried veggies because the guy taking order said veggies would be cooked in teriyaki sauce and would be much more flavorful. Mom ordered a combo plate with pork, chicken and shrimp. May have had some type of flat rib as well. Her meal included corn and macaroni salad.
I had to tell the guy taking my order more than once that I wanted shrimp. He kept saying veggie plate.
The food came and I told mom we should check the food before leaving. Hers was on top. Had so much food in container that the lid wasn't closed all the way. I made the mistake of thinking that since hers was correct then mine should be ok. BIG MISTAKE. Opened my container at home and all I had was a whole lot of rice, steamed veggies and corn. Not one piece of shrimp.
Called Hula Boy and was immediately placed on a "brief hold". Waited over 5 min. Hung up and called back and was asked if I could be placed on a "brief hold" again. I told them I was calling because my order wasn't right and was still placed on hold. They finally came back on phone and I requested that my order be remade with the shrimp.
Went back to restaurant, but this time I opened container. It had a ton of rice, steamed veggies. 6 medium sized shrimp and corn. I asked why I had steamed veggies again and the girl said she didn't know what they're supposed to look like. She took my plate and showed the cook. Came right back and said I had stir fried veggies. Said they don't cook them long at all on grill and that's how they look.
There was no flavor on my food at all. Mom's pork and chicken was dry and overcooked. I had to season and recook my food for it to be edible. The macaroni salad was horrible. No flavor at all. Had to season it as well.
We haven't been to this establishment in over 10 years and couldn't remember why. We do now. I would not recommend Hula Boy Charbroil to anyone. It's not authentic Hawaiian food. The price was way too high for what we actually received. The only reason I'd return is to get a full refund for the bland food...
Read moreUPDATE :( been going to Hula boy for a very long time. I was bummed to hear it was selling but ready to remain a regular. I watched the food drop a bit in quality, but it wasn't that big of a drop. I could tell there were some sutle changes to simple recipes, but like I said, not too bad. I paused catering orders for a while, so I didn't know how new management handled this process, now I know. I called and was met with a person that sounded like they were annoyed I called, then got passed to who I think was the catering person and was met with a flat no when I asked if I could so a catering order for this weekend. I'm not surprised 36 - 48 hours is short notice and i was expecting a no probably. Compared to before the management switch, I used to be able to know for certain I would be good with 5-7 days advance notice and if I needed something last minute ( a day or 2 notice) I would at least get a conversation with a compromise like only being able to order certain things that they had extra of. Well, after being told a no with no other conversation, I asked how long they needed for notice for next time and she gave me a vague month or so to place an order! Damn! I imagine it's still a questionable call even if done with a month of advance. Count me out as a regular and the 40 people coming in from out of town to have some HULA BOY! I added a pic of the Hawaiian Style Grill platr from across town where I...
