Underground Bakery & Cafe — Restaurant in Conway

They baked my cake for my 30th birthday, and it was magnificent. We called a week in advanced and they were able to make it happen, which we were very grateful for.

They took every idea I had into consideration and it came out exactly how the photos on my Pintrest board looked (I know this sounds silly, but when so much planning goes into throwing a dinner party, having things come out how you imagined is important!). We were enjoying our time so much that we forgot to get a photo of the cake before it was cut - that is my only regret, I'm sorry I don't have a photo to share!

It was a showstopping 8" three layer vanilla cake with chocolate ganache filling and vanilla buttercream, that was so tall it could not fit in the bakery box. The swirls of buttercream on top made it look so fancy, and the sprinkles on the side for decoration came out exactly how we described over the phone while placing the order. It made me gasp when it was brought out. I've never had a cake like this before. It was beautiful.

Even with its size, the ladies packaged the cake up securely and it was very easy to transport home.

And most importantly, it was delicious!! The buttercream was not too sweet and was not heavy. It was so light and fluffy, it complimented the ganache perfectly. The cake was so moist and flavorful I found myself eating just the cake, then going back for bites of the buttercream & ganache together. It was amazing, everyone enjoyed it so much.

My apologies again for not snapping a photo, we were enjoying the moment so much that it completely slipped everyone's minds. You truly made my 30th birthday amazing and we can't wait to order again from you in the future!

Summary: Amazing little cafe/bakery. Pancakes are life-affirmingly good, and Chai Latte puts Starbucks to shame. Hard to find entrance; go around the back of the plaza! Came here during a snowstorm (12"+) for brunch.

Food: Best pancakes I've ever had. They're like grilled or something, I don't know, they're just GREAT. Fluffy, and really rich. Not just some bland batter relying on syrup---they were GREAT. Home fries were above average but not life changing. Bacon was great and cooked as requested (I like it crispier). But the PANCAKES. Get the P-A-N-C-A-K-E-S.

Drinks: Wife got a Chai Latte. It was amazing. She's a Starbucks fangirl, and this one way WAY better---excellent. My orange juice was exquisite as well (coming from someone raised in a 'juice' household).

Service: Awesome! Janella was amazing and extremely attentive. Nancy was an all-star in the Kitchen. Legends.

Bakery/Store: They also have all sorts of delicious little treats and cakes for sale (cake bites, cakes, cheese cake truffles, cookies, etc ), and an attached mercantile store! Lots of country store crafts and stuff, with a small PG-13 section ('Screw Work', alcohol humor on mugs, etc.). There are restrooms in the cafe section.

Getting There: This place is HARD to find---you can't see it from the toad. A local shoveling outside during the storm at a nearby restaurant in the same plaza didn't even know it was here when we asked for directions! You have to go to the back of the plaza and loop around a bit.

This is the North Conway's best kept secret! It truly is an experience to come here, and the owner, Nanci, is just an angel. We came across the bakery which is quaintly located adjacent to her antique shop next to Sea Dog Brewing, in a desperate search to find a baker for our wedding just four short months out. We were cheerfully greeted by Nanci, who was thrilled to host an impromptu tasting and discuss options for catering our wedding desserts. She has such a pleasant, can-do attitude and truly cares not only about her bakery, but about her clients. Not only does she singlehandedly make what are undeniably the best baked goods in the area, she's more than reasonable and doesn't try to screw anybody over by inflating prices based on the term "wedding" (which is really way too common in the wedding industry). Every request we made, even if it wasn't something she had prior experience baking, she was willing to try out - and subsequently NAILED it! For our wedding, we requested 8 different kinds of cupcakes flavors, a small strawberry shortcake, donuts, meringue kisses, and caramels.
