The food was fine. The service was seriously inattentive and sloppy. Our party of five was seated promptly and we were asked for our drink order right away. We put in our food order with our drinks because we were in a hurry, which we made clear. 20 minutes later my friend had to go find the server and ask about our drinks. He was standing behind the bar going through receipts. Then the three drinks came quickly. No water for the other two though. Had to ask again for that, it eventually showed up. Had to remind the waiter that somebody had requested lemon in her water. Had to request water for the rest of the table. Wasn’t offered. Eventually the appetizers show up. No plates or utensils though. At this point we are mildly expressing some dissatisfaction. Lots of smiles and apologies but it doesn’t seem very sincere. After about 50 minutes the rest of the food finally comes (The restaurant was about 1/4 full). We point out that it would’ve been nice to have the soups and side salads before the entrées. My entrée isn’t there at all but I assume he is going back to grab it. Nope. Eventually the server (Austin) wanders by and my friend asked him about it. He says he totally forgot to put that one in. Again a glib apology. He does not offer a resolution. Just stands there smiling. I calmly tell him that this has been a disaster. He says that the kitchen is slow. I explain to him that has nothing to do with not getting water for 20 minutes. At that point we are completely disgusted and just ask him to bring the check soon as possible.
My friend still gave him a generous tip, as I’m sure those are shared with the rest of the staff and it is during the holidays, but she wrote on the back of the receipt to please see an online review for...
Read moreFantastic beer (5 stars), mediocre food (2 stars). I've sampled a dozen beers and half a dozen dishes.
Beer: Best lagers in the Iowa city area. Fantastic and balanced Munch lager, superb German-style lager, good Marzen. For the hoppy ales, Reunion is excellent for their sessionable offerings. The big "Tank-puncher" leaves me wanting more aroma and less raw IBU's.
Food: When you read the menu, you expect great things. Standard pub offerings and a few more sophisticated options: Korean BBQ, brisket and Brussels, etc. When the dishes arrive though, you're immediately reminded that you're dining in a brewery. The brisket tastes and looks like a crock-pot meal. The Korean BBQ (huge favorite of mine) is pan-fried pork belly, deep fried kimchi, and ton of chili-mayo - the dish is very heavy/fatty, flavors are poorly balanced, and overall is a terrible interpretation of the style. My suggestion is to have some beers, and then head to 30hop or somewhere else that does their menu justice.
(For the chef: Last I checked, you need a soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, vinegar reduction to make Korean BBQ, and everything else is extra. Mix a little go chu chang into the sauce... DO NOT use it to finish a dish. Do not use mayo in this dish. The fried kimchi is too much - find something else to add the textural contrast to the sticky/glazed pork belly. Kimchi itself goes well though: sour to the...
Read moreLoved the beer flights and everything on draft! Our food experience was disappointing. I have a dairy sensitivity and it was difficult to get information about what I could eat on the menu. I ended up sick the next day.
After being assured I could eat one of the sauces in my dish, I took a bite and said wait, this doesn’t seem right. I asked our server to check again in the ingredients and turns out the kitchen had misinformed her. She had to go hunt through the kitchen and check the ingredients herself, and I’m glad she did. She absolutely bent over backwards to track down the best info for us, and we appreciated it! The info just wasn’t accurate.
I would highly recommend finding somewhere else to eat if you have a full out dairy allergy. Always a bummer when the kitchen isn’t informed about allergens, which is 100% necessary to run a safe dining experience.
Also very bummed in general that the vegetarian tofu sandwich can’t be made vegan! I was looking forward to that. Perhaps adding some dairy-free sauces or spreads like hummus could make this a possibility in the future? I’d come back for it!
Fried oyster mushrooms were fantastic. Realizing now that I can’t say for sure they didn’t have dairy in...
