We visited here 2 days in a row so that speaks to something... The first visit, we met with friends who had already gotten a table. We ordered our food, received it promptly and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The server was kind and attentive. We really enjoyed the pastries we had gotten and wanted to bring some home and because the breakfast we received during our first visit was delicious, we went running back the following day....
Our second visit was disappointing. We stood for 7 minutes at the front door waiting to be seated by the "please wait to be seated sign". After being seated, our server (who happened to be the same server who cared for us the day before) promptly provided menus. After about 5 minutes, she came to get our drink orders and asked if we were also ready to order our meals, to which we said we were. She said she needed to retrieve her note pad and returned a few minutes later. We placed our drink and food orders at this time. At 12:46pm, we received our drinks. (I only know the specific time because my kids were asking about what time we had to be home so we were calculating the long drive ahead). At 1:30pm, we finally received our food.... we had watched 4 tables around us order after us and receive their food before us. The restaurant had about 6 tables when we got there and maybe 12 upon our departure. We were at this point, just ready to eat and go. We requested a condiment (salsa/hot sauce) for my husband's food and the server acknowledged it and said she would bring it right out.... he waited another 15 minutes before just eating the meal without it. My daughter had ordered french toast (sweet) and what she received was so burned on the side they put plate down, she didn't realize and kept telling me it tasted sour.... (we realized when we went to box it to take with us that the whole underside was inedible...) At this point, my appetite was ruined and my kids were ready to go. The table beside us was clearly frustrated and their complaining didn't help the situation. I asked for a to-go box.
So anyhow- the food is good for the most part. The pastries were incredible. The service was...
Read moreLocated in Corpus Christie, Texas. Dining room is plain. Casual attire is more than enough. JB's appears to be pretty busy. A sign on the wall states 'breakfast lunch'. I do not know if they serve dinner. They were open and serving a packed dining room at 9:30am.
We were told of this German restaurant by some European friends. It's a long Memorial Day weekend, so, on Sunday morning we drove about 200 miles to sample their cuisine.
I really am at a loss of how to rate this restaurant. For reasons I cannot explain, JB's management decided to offer ONLY scrambled eggs and brats, or schnitzel.. That is basically it! No regular menu. No Corned beef. No Pastrami. No stuffed cabbage. No noodles. Why would a restaurant choose to offer next to nothing on a huge holiday weekend? Especially in a tourist town?
I am not exaggerating. I ordered the scrambled eggs and brats. I received a small serving of eggs, maybe one egg, and one small brat sliced and mixed with the egg. Two slices of toast. NO potatoes! How can a German restaurant not serve potatoes? Potatoes are to Germans what rice is to Asians. Very disappointing.
My wife and her parents ordered waffles, with brats on the side. The only item really suggesting German cooking is the brats. Everything else is what we could have ordered at our neighborhood IHOP.
If you cannot, or will not, eat pork or beef, then you would be stuck with waffles and fruit.
We really expected some fine homestyle German cooking. I cannot overlook the decision to not serve potatoes nor a regular menu.
We finished our limited meals and purchased some 'homemade' bread, poppy seed roll and a few other assorted pastries.
All in all, very disheartening. What we did eat was fine. The pastries look delicious. Will try them later today. But I must say, I will not travel so far for JB's again.
As a side note, NO hot tea. Only hot coffee or hot chocolate. More disappointment. When I asked the server if hot tea is available, she replied "we have tea, but there's ice in it". And with that, I'll end...

This place is simply a must-try for any travelers, let alone German food connoisseurs, in Corpus Christi.
The Lunch Sampler simply punched way above its price with the flavor, quality, and portion of the content: 1/2 of schnitzel, fleischkäse ("meat cheese"), meatball patty, bratkartoffeln (German fries) as a side, and spicy brown mustard to tie everything together. Since the Sampler is understandably protein & carb heavy, the only point of improvement could be adding more fiber by including additional veggie side or enhancing the bratkartoffeln with complementing veggie.
Chosen from the recommendation from the Chef, the Strawberry Cheese pie was simply the best German rendition of strawberry cheese cake I've ever had with its softness, perfect amount & tartness of strawberry filling, and clean aftertaste.
According to Ben the Waiter, this location was actually new after moving from old location in Padre Island ("The Island"). While the interiorwas pleasantly spacious & clean, it surprisingly felt like it didn't do justice to the high quality & authenticity of the food. Instead of bright orange color scheme and clashing combination of cookie-cutter decorations & signs, more use of vintage wood & decorations that captures German heritage will bring forth the true value of this establishment.
Above all, every staff from Ben the Waiter, two Chefs (one of them actually from Germany), and the Baked Goods Server was truly friendly & accommodating throughout the entire visit. I simply cannot wait to visit this place again upon my next visit to...
