TLDR: management hired an actively antagonistic bouncer who will pick patrons to single out, bully, insult, and then physically push you (you backwards) down the stairs to eject you. BB and Citizen Public Market are unaccountable and absent, even when they negligently harm long-time customers.
Was a regular here for 3+ years, on good terms and known by name by most of the bartenders, as well as the former bouncer they had (wore a cowboy hat). Unfortunately, ~8-9 months ago they hired the bouncer at the root of this review.
I was the only solo patron in the bar when the bouncer decided to pick on me, i.e., I was an easy target to isolate and harass without repurcussion. He didn't make any gentle, reasonable requests - he instantly escalated to yelling at me, insulting my character, and attempting to physically intimidate me.
This harrassment included:
-Instant escalation from "no-trouble" to verbal harassment, berating me and yelling at me every 30 seconds. He engaged in physical "threat display" tactics, like widening his eyes, baring his teeth, standing on his toes and stretching out his arms.
-Insulting my character, my appearance, and (oddly) engaging in a deeply dehumanized tirade against homeless people; he said I was "weird" (I am neurodivergent, so hearing people insult me directly hurts), "looked like a street rat" (I was dressed in normal business attire), among other mean things.
-Demanding me to "drink faster and get the hell out" - he claimed the place was "getting too busy and you're taking up space" even though I was literally in the middle of my second drink.
-Stalking me around the bar when I tried to distance myself from him. I moved to the remote back corner to sit at the bar (hoping the bartender, who knew me by name, could deescalate). The bouncer completely abandoned his duties at the staircase, did not card anyone for 20+ minutes while he stood over me bullying me at the bar.
-Ignored my good-faith attempts to assuage what concerns I could, and to deescalate. I was entirely compliant, very careful not to attack him verbally or physically in any way - I only insisted I needed to finish my drink and get my card back.
-Went on a vicious anti-homeless rant where, in many more words, he claimed the homeless are near sub-human lazy leeches, and that I was probably one of them.
-Before I had finished my drink, stole my bag with no warning and said "it's time for you to go". Needless to say, bouncers are NOT legally allowed to take your possessions. He obviously knew I would try to hold onto them. As far as I was concerned, this obviously disturbed man may be about to throw my stuff down the stairs, so I grabbed onto my bag.
-Used my bag to pull me out of PACKED bar tug-of-war style while not watching where he was going and nearly trampling patrons.
-Used the most dangerous route to eject me from the premises. Instead of attempting to use the elevator, he chose to push me backwards down the stairs. I lost my footing and started to fall backwards, but fell on a patron who was climbing the same set of stairs and he arrested my fall. I very well could have been killed if not.
-Continued to attack me out past the boundary of Citizen Public Market and to the actual curb, where he threw me against one of the street-bordering tables so violently that my phone flew out of my breast pocket, fell onto the concrete and broke. I had thought I was recording, unfortunately the damn touch screen had turned it off in the scuffle and I only captured the moment I recovered it on the sidewalk.
In summary, what existing anxieties I had have spiralled into significant agoraphobia, as CPM is very near my apartment and I feel aggressively unwelcome in the part of town I've lived almost a decade (I'm a lifelong LA resident).
Basically,...
Read moreIt's a crime I've been here three times and am just now writing this review.
For those who don't read lengthy reviews, read only this: GO, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Firstly, I want to credit my three great experiences at this amazing bar to the partnering with a blog named Love and Loathing Los Angeles. Caroline, the owner/author, posted kind things about this place and I went once because of her blog's post, then I went back two more times -- one of which, my birthday -- because this bar is that amazing!
Imagine you see the Citizen's Public Market sign in the same font as the Citizen Kane cover text, and then (staying in theme) you've stepped into the Xanadu of food-lovers and alcohol enthusiasts. Bar Bohemian so happens to be located on the rooftop giving it's above-ground, outdoor speak-easy vibe. It is dimly lit, filled with people, and you may locate a cocktail by the name of "Rosebud" on the menu... you'll have to find out for yourself.
In the thrice times I visited, I can say the cocktails were excellent (Old Fashioned lovers, unite!), well priced, the average wait was 3-6 minutes trying to get through to bartenders, the Bar Bohemian team is always friendly, and I always have an amazing time. The drink menu has several great options, however the bartenders are of a kind that you tell them what/how you're feeling and they manage to serve magnificence in a glass -- they know what they're doing.
I know I'll be back, it's just a matter of time. Thank you to the Bar Bohemian team, anyone would appreciate going...

Stumbled upon it a bit randomly wondering where the stairs were leading and discovered this cozy bar that’s also dog-friendly! 🐾
The bartenders were super nice and the cocktails were too + big glasses! (I tried the Nomadic)
Not a lot of seating but with just 2 people it was easy to find a spot (it’s all first come first serve). Very fun social vibe, we ended up chatting pretty much the whole time with the people sitting on both sides of us and it was lovely. 👯♀️👯👯♂️
You can also bring food from downstairs! (I placed an order on my phone and just had to pick it up 15...
