When we arrived, there were numerous empty tables but we were asked to wait to be seated so the server could catch up. While waiting, we were shown a menu and advised that Hjem was not your typical SD breakfast restaurant with the typical SD breakfast fare. After a short 10 min. wait, we were seated. A bit later, two large groups and two other groups arrived and were immediately seated and it was obvious they were frequent diners. My husband ordered the Eggs Benedict special and was absolutely pleased. From the shall bite he shared, it was delicious and obviously a homemade sauce. My breakfast was good but my eggs could have been cooked a bit longer as I ordered them over medium, not easy. The bacon was cooked to an absolute dark brown crisp which I found distasteful. Another customer later informed me that bacon burnt crisp is how smoked peppered bacon is supposed to be cooked but you can request it cooked light. This was an oddity for us but we rarely buy meat from grocery stores preferring instead to order a hog, cow and buffalo each year and we smoke and dry age our meats. My husband and I have traveled to Iceland and other countries to enjoy culinary delights banned in most countries and we have dined at many fine establishments in the US. We may have looked a bit rough with a hick vibe, having ATVd into town during a snowstorm but we do know our food. That said, its a quaint restaurant and the staff...
Read moreHJEM A.M. is truly an experience unto itself!
The hospitality is out of this world, the service is extraordinary, and the menu is elevated and full of culinary surprises and delights.
Our children don’t have to beg for a visit each time we are in Custer (although they love it so much that they inevitably do 😉)!
Be sure to make this a must-experience on your next visit to the Black Hills.
Getting reservations is a great idea as this new gem in the Black Hills culinary landscape is something you will not want to miss but awareness is quickly spreading and some days tables are tough to come by on a walk in basis.
Our personal favorites include the chef’s daily special (always!), rice pudding (garnished brilliantly with fresh mint, local honey, Maldon salt and gorgeous almonds), the avacado toast, Custer’s Last Meal, and the eggs Benedict (my husband particularly loves the opportunity to mix it up by substituting fried chicken and hot sauce or salmon or the traditional ham), and—come on a lucky day for fresh Maine oysters or deviled eggs with salmon, cream fresh and, on an especially lucky day, caviar. Paired with Voss sparkling water or HJEM’s legendary hot chocolate, this indulgent and deeply fulfilling breakfast spot is sure to delight palates of all...
Read moreMy meal started off fantastic we didn’t have a reservation and we’re seated on the patio. The music and the atmosphere was lovely. Our food was amazing. My boyfriend ordered bottomless mimosas and I had a hard coffee. Our server brought our check directly after we finished our food. My hard coffee was still full and he ordered BOTTOMLESS mimosas and our server stopped bringing the mimosas so I went in to ask about it and the owner apologized and brought him one but then asked for my id. I was not drinking the mimosas as I’m allergic to orange juice but she asked for my ID. I was caught off guard because I already had alcohol in my coffee and we had already paid before she wanted to see my ID. I showed her and she left. Again the server came and filled everyone’s mimosas but my boyfriend’s. So I went back in to speak with her. She informed me that I was too drunk and needed to leave, and She had people waiting for the table anyways. I had one hard coffee and she could have confirmed that with my bill. I asked for my 20 tip back and left.
Also I thought maybe we stayed to long but I posted pictures of our food 43 mins before we left so we had only had our food for less than an hour. I can’t say for sure how long it took to get our food but it didn’t feel...
