Diet, my love, I cheated on you.
You've been good to me for a good while, but I was unfaithful.
We shared good times, had a few laughs, but I was seduced by the cheap & easy - carne asada fries & 3 rolled tacos w/ guac & cheese.
Browsing the adjacent Home Depot, checking out PVC pipe fittings for a possible future aquaponics project, my tummy was telling me to take a quick, leisurely stroll towards Albertaco's. During my high school days, I would often stop by for a carne asada burrito & 3 rolled tacos. A few (okay, several) odd years later, I still come back for the gut-busting, booty-jiggling delights of this Mecca of munchies.
Conveniently & wisely located across from Cypress College, feeding the future of America by giving them what they want - fried, fat & cheap. That's Albertaco's, in a nutshell.
Today, I went for the usual 3 rolled tacos/ w gauc & cheese. No skimping on the guac & cheese, yes sir! I saw a flyer on the window saying Albertaco's now has chicken rolled tacos as an option. Ooo, I'll have that, por favor! The chicken was good & the tacos didn't disappoint. Only $2.85, to boot.
Carne asada fries - here's where I hurt my diet the most. Fries, sour cream, cheese & guac w/ hot sauce sprinkled liberally throughout. So, so good! $6.75 never seemed so filling. I'm definitely not feeling very sexy, what w/ my bloated belly & noxious fumes coming out of my derriere. Still, my tastebuds were dancing Gangnam-style w/ each bite. Dee-lish!
There's a few outdoor tables to eat, with 2 drive-thru lanes to expedite rushed customers along. Not a white table cloth dining experience, but it works so it's all good.
If you're in the area, whether drunk or sober, come by for some cheap & tasty Mexican food at Albertaco's. Don't go crazy w/ the hot sauce if you're a wuss. I told ya...
Read moreI remember the first time I ate here - back before online reviews existed and Yahoo Maps was your primary choice for navigation because it was your ONLY option (even though it often gave you wrong directions). It was a typical summer day and I needed to get gas but turned into the wrong entrance, ending up in the Albertaco's parking lot. I was hungry and decided to grab a bite. Little did I know my life was about to change.
The carne asada burrito is a thing of beauty here. The yellow wrapping paper gives way to that first bite of tortilla, which opens up to a wave of saliva-inducing smells. The freshly made red hot sauce adorns the fluorescent green guacamole, complementing the succulent juices of the carne asada and sour cream. You add a pickled carrot slice to the slurry of food in your mouth and bite into a jalapeno, hoping it isn't a rogue fireball of misery. You wash down every bite with your watered down horchata as you realize, life is good. But, before you know it, your wrapper is empty and you are overcome with fear, wondering how soon can you be hungry again to eat another.
Fear not, for the carne asada fries come to the rescue. Slightly overcooked skinny fries that remain crunchy, even on the drive home. However, often times, they don't last that long because, against your better judgement, you choose to eat there even though it's freezing cold -- your stomach simply can't wait long enough for the drive and ignores the chills that run down your spine as you sit on the icy concrete benches. A cornucopia of glory, separated only by zones of sour cream and guacamole, but brought together by melting cheese, it is simply a thing of greatness.
15 years later, opening that yellow wrapper or styrofoam lid is just as amazing as...
Read moreAlbertacos, oh Albertacos, where do I begin? Every time I fly into California, my stomach starts growling just thinking about the delicious burritos and carne asada fries that await me. It's like a tradition, as soon as I land I head straight to Albertacos and I'm never disappointed. And the best part? The food comes out so fast, it's like they have a "Burrito Express Lane" for me.
My usual order is the California burrito with extra carne asada and sour cream, because you can never have too much of a good thing, right? And the carne asada fries? Oh baby, those fries are like little bites of heaven. But the real MVP is their salsa bar, I always pay extra to get as many salsas as I can without being labeled as a salsa-hoarder. And let me tell you, the habanero salsa is like liquid fire in your mouth, but in the best way possible.
And the cherry on top? The burrito tortilla is cooked to perfection, it's like a warm hug from your grandma. The best burrito I've ever had in my life, without a doubt. So, if you're ever in California and want to live your best burrito-loving life, make sure to stop by Albertacos and thank me later. Highly highly recommended, 10/10 would...
