Never again. I can't dine under deliberate deception. We (a party of 6) went to Don Pepes in Richardson for lunch around noon. The server brought 2 sets of menus, gave us the dinner menu as she placed the lunch menus on an adjacent table. We exchange the dinner menus for the lunch menus placed in arm reach of us, and ordered from the lunch menu. The server picked up both sets of menus, as she took our orders. When the check came, she charged us all for the dinner prices, plus added on a mandatory gratuity of 20%. Now, I'm personally a generous tipper, and requiring a 20% tip for a lunch group of 6 didn't bother me at first until I witness the deliberate acts that followed. Someone from our 6 noted to the server that she charged us more that was listed on the menu. The server followed with "well I gave you the dinner menu, the dinner prices are more". We all stared surprised, as we continued to tell her we order from the lunch menu and that lunch is from 11-3PM. So to sum things up Don Pepe attempted to overcharge us then tax on the largest possible gratuity. Be aware. Check your receipts. Check your server.
I hope the server knows that under Texas and federal employment law, these mandatory gratuities belong to the restaurant, and are not required to give any portion of the charge to the employees. Additionally, it cannot be part of the tips to determine the amount of the tip credit....
Read moreIce has finally thawed in Dallas and everybody is out on Saturday night. Tried Don Pepe's for the first time in quite a few years. They closed their Coit and Arapaho location a couple of years ago and reopened in the new development at Meadowcreek and Arapaho. First impression...restaurant was packed - good for them. We were warmly greeted by the hostess, and we were offered an accommodating arrangement considering how packed it was. We were set up in our own space, but it was about 2 feet from the restrooms. Wasn't too much of a distraction. Servers were prompt and courteous. Menu was pretty traditional with basic Tex-Mex selections. I ordered a house margarita on the rocks, no salt. Tasted fine, a little expensive. Waitress brought us warm chips with salsa that was sweet but had a little kick. Tasty. My wife ordered Enchiladas Poblano with mole, and I ordered chicken and cheese enchiladas with mole. Anyway, food was fine. Service was better than decent. Ambience was warm and inviting. Probably a little more expensive than comparable experiences. Worth...
Read moreI went here for a birthday party and as large as our party (30+ people including kids) was, they were still able to accommodate all of us. Service was exceptional and I was pretty impressed that they were able to cater to all of us. We were served Chips + Salsa + Guacamole + Queso. Our entire table grabbed margaritas for the most part and I grabbed a La Paleta. I also ordered the Mole Poblano Enchiladas.
The chips and salsa were pretty typical. We ordered a spicy salsa for a small subsection of our group and it was actually spicy so it added a nice touch. The queso wasn’t anything special. The guacamole was served in a large granite mortar and pestle so I was hoping it would have a little more spice. The La Paleta grabbed my attention because of all the different fruit liquors that were mixed in. It had a chamoy rim which made it even more delicious. I don’t have mole often and this was nice. There was an appropriate amount of sweetness from the mole; the chicken wasn’t as juicy. The black beans and...
