Like Momma made . I would like to start out by saying that food is more than just filling your gut . It's an emotional experience or at least it should be.
Gonzalez has been a part of my life since I was 7 years old my mom would bring it home for me after she got off work on the weekends she worked off Maple Ave . I remember the building it was a grey brick building on the corner . My mom would always bring home potato and egg burritos for me . The tortillas are just like Mamma's thick and very hearty and have flavor not like the stuff you get at other places that serve in house made tortillas. You can tell a lot by the customers that are there if you see Mexican people eating there you know you are in a good Mexican food place and here you get that . I have tried almost everything on the menu and have never been displeased with anything I have been served .You will leave here full cause once you start eating you cannot stop . The chips and salsa are great not like the cookie cutter tex mex places you can tell it is made fresh and is served warm no batch is the same but very similar sometime spicy sometimes spicy sweet you cannot get enough of the stuff.
I have been to all the restaurants that Gonzalaz has had and i can tell you nothing beats the Jefferson location. although the Carrolton location which is now closed was very close. The Mesquite location is by far a bigger location but not as good as the other location on Jefferson in Oak Cliff
You might say I am biased on this place cause of the history I have with with the place but I want to tell you something that my grandmother said to me Dar crédito cuando el crédito es debido. Which means give credit when credit is due , so here is just that .
I am just one man and an opinion you need to decide...
Read moreMost love this place and I do too. Me being of Latino descent will be a little more critical of any Mexican restaurant. So to continue on let me start with my order. The Gonzalez special was delicious. Every bit was on point, but like I said; I'm critical. The cheese enchiladas lack color. Homemade enchiladas are usually cooked in a chili sauce that is extracted from an ancho chili which gives color to the corn tortillas when cooked in this special ancho sauce. The bean tostada that was topped with bean, lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sprinkled shredded cheese was good, but the actual tostada itself was on the too thin side. I had to carefully handle with care so to not crack or break my tostada with all the toppings. The beef taco was great although the meat lack seasoning. My rice and beans was on point. Rice not too dry, cooked perfectly. Same goes for the refried beans. Our waitress was very friendly and courteous. To say she was professional would be an understatement. I wanted to take her home but the wife was against it. The restaurant had good ambiance and comfortable. The walls are colorful and plenty of tvs to watch your favorite game. I would come early on weekends and evenings if possible due to its popularity. So be prepared for a wait. The place is small. My only reason for four stars is due to my Latino heritage for being slightly critical of Mexican restaurant food compared to homemade Mexican food made from home. Also I would like to add is the fresh tortillas which are home made flour tortillas. You cannot leave this place without having...
Read moreMy family has come to Gonzalez restaurants for years and years. I ordered 2 chicken fajita burritos, something we have ordered for at least the last 20 years lol. No lie, we have been eating here for a long time but mostly the one in Pleasant Grove. The girl said “ok two chicken tacos” and I said “no, chicken fajita” and she said they were the same. Sure enough, i check them and they are NOT what I’ve been ordering. It was shredded chicken with hot lettuce. I told her that and she says “well I’ll see what they say” even though I told her that is NOT what we normally order. So she takes it back and says it’ll be 5-10 minutes. Then I ask her for the extra guacamole and pico that ALWAYS comes with the fajita burritos. She says no that’ll be extra. I told her that I always get more than one tiny cup of guacamole with 3 fajita burritos. She says no that it’s always extra. She just shot down everything I would say and also gave a lot of attitude. She acted like she didn’t want to be working. If not, then get someone else to take her shift! I’ve never had an issue with Gonzalez until today. Came here on a Sunday at 5:30 and it was the main hostess. When she brought my food out, she didn’t even say anything. The cooks did include the guacamole and pico de Gallo so I appreciate that. But someone please train that person on...
