I think Roy G.'s is a great addition to the neighborhood. As long as they keep up the quality of the food/drinks, and maintain such a welcoming community atmosphere, they're be here for a long time!
We made our first visit around 4:30 on a Saturday. Wanted to make sure we missed the lunch and dinner rushes (drove by at 1:00 that day and the patio was packed!). Our server was really nice. She explained they were in the midst of a "super soft" opening (and I resisted the urge to ask when their opening would become really hard. lol).
To start, we wanted to "Taste the Rainbow": a series of shots aligned to the colors of the Pride flag. Was a little disappointed we couldn't get the full flight of seven at once because TABC rules will only allow 2 drinks per person at a table, so poor Indigo had to be left out. Now, let it be said, I'm not a "shot" kind of person, so while I love the novelty of the idea, I didn't particularly care for the ones I tasted with the exception of Blue which was delicious! The other were so alcohol-y (if that's a word) and a bit much for me. Not knocking them though... the drinks are as-described in the menu. We just thought it would be fun to try them all.
As for food, given the soft opening the menu was relegated to a single page. Good stuff though! We started with a half order of the cheese fries that had bacon and ample jalapeno peppers. Our party had the pulled pork sandwich, the pickle brined and fried chicken sandwich, and I had the Snookies Hickory Burger (sans onions). We all agreed that we enjoyed the meal. And I think the price point for all was perfect!
A couple of final notes. First, they've gone high tech with their order processing system. The server takes the order on the device and it goes straight to the kitchen, and everything is handled on the same device when you pay afterward. It just makes things a little faster which is nice.
The only issue with the visit, and I suppose this is a weird one, had to do with the restroom. The one I visited had a huge mirror directly behind the toilet, which forced me to view myself from my knees up as I performed some of the personal of business one can do standing up. It was an incredibly weird experience, because I can't really say I've ever been forced to watch myself from that perspective in that moment!
Finally, and I think this is hilariously awesome assuming it's intentional. All three of the television monitors in the main dining area didn't have the typical sports or news channels playing. No, Roy G.'s is embracing a different vibe! One TV was playing a YouTube channel on "miniature cuisine", another on "toy making", and the last I think was about "doll houses". All creative arts. Loved it! Will definitely...
Read moreMe and my friend were visiting from out of town and were looking for a place to eat. We are not from Texas so we just google some stuff close by. We saw all the great reviews and decided to give this place a try. They were not busy AT ALL. Perfect right ? Wrong. We walked in and sat down across from the bar. I loved the Halloween decorations, that’s all o got a video of . So 15 min go by and No one spoke to us or greeted us. We patiently waited and no one came to our table. After several times of two staff members walking past our table I politely stopped one and asked how the service worked. I assumed maybe we missed something and were supposed to go to the bar to order. She let out a long sigh as if I was bothering her then told me to hold on. I apologized and explained we had been waiting a while and are not from here. She smiled said it’s fine then Grabs us waters. After waiting around for her again she took our drink order. Another 15 min goes by and the bar tender is wiping down glasses talking to his customers sitting at the bar. Our drink ticket was just sitting there. At this point I felt uncomfortable and again this is Texas I’m from the Midwest so I didn’t know what was going on or why we were getting treated the way we did. We got up, I stopped the waitress and told her don’t worry about the drinks we are leaving, I know when I’m not wanted somewhere. She let out another big sigh of frustration like yea same girl same ! It was in an LGBTQ friendly community but apparently if you don’t look the part or maybe if your not a regular they treat you different. Definitely ruined my morning for a while because I couldn’t believe how we were getting treated. Where was the southern hospitality everyone raved about, it Felt like the 1950s and we stepped into the wrong bar....
Read moreToday is Thursday October the 6th I walk inside the restaurant it took a while for them to greet me I had to get their attention for them to come out so the little lady comes out and she takesmy order everything was fine the food was good everything was great until I seen her walk out with two waters in her hand for two white gentlemen that sat down after me so I'm trying to figure out why didn't she offer me water but she offered them water and as soon as they walked in she came and she set them down I think a lot of people don't realize the things they do to black people because they do it so much it doesn't seem like it's a big deal but it's a big deal to me if I come in I deserve water just like anybody else any other race yes I know it may not seem like a big deal to you but this is like the second time this week something has happened to me that it feels like I was discriminated against because of my skin color I did not leave her a tip and I'm a big tipper I tip big even if the server didn't get the order right I still do my best to tip because I don't really know what the waiter or waitress is going through that day but if you deliberately forget to bring me water but you bring it out to the white counterparts to me I have a problem with that pay attention to what you're doing don't give water to one customer and don't give it to the others also if you're going to come out so fast to wait on the white gays do the same with the...
