Little place with potential but unfortunately badly managed. We went there last week because my wife craved some crepes. Had two kids in tow and we were met there by two of our friends.
About the experience:
First, the place is tiny and very cramped. Not much space inside or outside and is not visible from the street. Some seating outside but no trash can be be seen in sight (outside or in). We ordered the salmon crepe with buckwheat bather and cheese, brisket crepe, two nutella crepes for the kids and for our desert one peach crepe and one lemon curd crepe. We asked the desert crepes be served after we finish out main course. The food showed up and I can say the salmon buckwheat crepe was inedible to say the least even though the server suggested that type of batter. My wife however enjoyed her brisket crepe. At this point I would say the experience was okay but sure enough it went down the drain fast. I went in to let them know we are ready for the rest of the order and were told they will get it started. 15 minutes later I went back in and was told they are working on it right then. 15 min more minutes later I went back in to inquire and a young fellow told me they had to push my order because of the wave of people who came in for lunch and since mine was desert only it makes sense it can wait. I argued that I placed the order an hour ago and was told: "this is how we serve our customer here and this is the only thing I am going to tell you". Okay, a little bit of attitude there although I was nice with them and even left a $10 tip up front even before I tasted their food. I asked to have the order cancelled but it seems they just started having the crepes done so I agreed to wait and pick the crepes up. The finally delivered one hour and 15 minutes after I ordered them. I then proceeded to call the manager and suggest he makes some changes to allow the kitchen to move faster and perhaps train the staff to communicate better and treat the customer in a more palatable way. Julien Eelsen, the owner, apologized and blamed it on the Sunday rush and the kitchen being overwhelmed. He however asked that I share my contact with him via text or email so he can reach out to me with a little sorry gesture. I texted him my contact within an hour and thanked him for listening to my complaint. Never heard back from him. I guess he does give the tone for his crew after all. Too bad because it could be a great little restaurant.
UPDATE: The manager emailed me a couple of days after I published this review and apologized again and refunded me the desert part of the meal.
About the food:
The food was okay, but not great. The crepes were not puffy enough, they were cold by the time we got them, the ingredients were sparse. I could not say I enjoyed it enough that I would ever drive back there again. A bit pricey for the offering.
About the restaurant:
This is indeed a tiny place. Is more suitable for couples or parties up to 3 people. Anything above that and it will be a challenge to seat your friends. We had six people and had to stand outside while the two kids had a small table outside. At some point while the girls went to the bathroom, one of the waiters came out and took my daughter's chair without asking even though the food was still on her table. The restaurant is tucked in the back so is not visible from the street....
Read moreWould give it 0 stars if I could, since I didn't even get to taste the food. I brought my son here to celebrate his birthday. The menu looked good and it was crowded in their tiny space, which is to be expected for a Sunday morning. There were 3 parties waiting in line and looking at the menu, I saw one of the workers explaining the menu to the large party in front of me... So it was assumed they were still serving food. I stepped up to place an order for 2 crepes and a coffee. I have the guy my order and right as I was finishing a girl came up and told us they weren't taking anymore orders, because the kitchen was backed up and trying to catch up on orders. Ummmm.... Say what???! It's Sunday morning, you have people lined up and ready to pay for food, and you're telling me you aren't wanting anymore business?? Maybe you should staff your kitchen better for busy times so you don't turn people away. I would have understood if you said the kitchen was backed up and food would take longer than usual... But to completely turn people away is crazy... Especially to not communicate that to people who are waiting in line. I turned around and left. Went to Cafe Brazil in Bishop Arts. Had some delicious coffee and crepes while sitting on the patio. Don't think I will be back...
Read moreSERIOUSLY good crepes. My date and I got here less than ten minutes before close, and the staff was still taking orders and attentive to customers in the cafe. We ordered THREE crepes (we were hungry) and they came out within ten minutes!! They even offered to serve us the sweet crepe we ordered after we finished our meal, which I thought was super thoughtful.
We ordered the smoked turkey/pears/mozz/parmigiano crepe + cranberries/tossed greens/walnuts salad and my partner got the smoked brisket/queso fresco/mozz/pickles/jalapeños/bbq cream. Both were stellar. FIVE STARS. The crepes themselves were incredibly tasty, the flavor shone through regardless of the filling. It was crazy how the taste of the flour crepe could be tailored to enhance the overall plate. So good!! We also indulged in a nutella/peanut butter/strawberry crepe to share, highly recommend. We had it to go, and they wrapped it in foil so that it would stay warm!
The place was small and had some outdoor seating as well! Probably good for a nice sunny day. I thought the setup was good for date night (for two) or catching up with friends over dessert (the more the merrier)! A parking lot nearby made the trip easier. Will DEFINITELY be back as soon as I can make...
