Whew, we came in cuz Bev's now-viral pastries were sold out around the corner and a google search said Salt Block was "the best brunch in Dayton!" Adorable place. It was hopping (seemingly unexpectedly) the day we came, so we waited a sec and then sat at the bar. When we ordered we were offered the special - English meat pie! - which we indeed took to go for someone at home. Service was not fast due to a.) it being busy and b.) food being carefully made almost right under our noses (we sat at the bar) so it wasn't a big deal, but we were super excited when we saw our open-faced biscuits finally coming into existence. Delicious, and VERY filling - we both ate exactly half. Got the bill and was shocked to find the meat pie special was $25. Like, one brunchy-breakfast meal item, with a delicious side, was t w e n t y f i v e dollars. Lordy be. The meat pie is big... But it's the size of a calzone, not an actual pie (which I knew going into it). That spontaneous brunch for three ended up costing us $75, which is like... lunch in NYC? Breakfast in Switzerland? There wasn't steak or wagyu beef or booze or truffles or even vegan-woven lace involved. So yeah. It was a nice experience with a rather shocking bill. That being said, I'd love to go back and drink tap water and try their grilled zucchini and broccoli crunch salad, and maybe have a brownie.

We were visiting from Canada and this was such a good find as our first stop of the day to fuel up ! Delicious and hearty, the cafe is soooo cute and the atmosphere was super good. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable about their menu items and specials so we really were able to try a lot of things. We started with the daily cornbread, which was cheddar thyme with fresh butter. We devoured this therefore no photo. For drinks I had the iced vanilla almond latte and my friends had the house coffee and strawberry cucumber mint infused water, all has free refills and was delicious. We all got so many refills. I got the corn chowder biscuit with the cheddar thyme biscuit with side of smoked bacon. My friends had the biscuit and gravy with everything biscuit with side potatoes and BLT biscuit with buttermilk biscuit and side soup of the day which was shrimp and rice. Everything was so good and the biscuits were so moist !!! I ended up getting two to go to bring back to Canada with me. We finished with a side cobbler that has already been half eaten by the time I took the photo but was delightful and decadent!! Definitely will be back if I visit Ohio again :)

I have been here MANY times. The service is always spot on. This isn't a seat you, serve you, push you out the door sort of place. You may have to wait a few minutes to order or for your food to come to the table. You will have time to catch up with a friend but also be ready to leave when you are done. Be kind and don't hang around after you're done, seating is at a premium. They have a community table, a few low tables and counter service for about 12-14 high seats. You may have to wait for a seat at a table if you have someone that needs a low seat. The food...the regular menu is a pretty diverse place: breakfast, salads, tinned fish trays (check the menu because if that's your preference, this should be a stop for you), sandwiches. There is usually 1 or 2 daily specials and a special cobbler. Saturdays are where it's at with biscuits and gravy! Today I had the daily special: cheese tortellini with sausage, peppers and onions with the blueberry peach cobbler and peach iced tea. Skip the chain breakfast places and head downtown for this amazing breakfast place!
