My German-born Holocaust refugee husband was weaned on German rye bread, which he used to love, and which we have not been able to find in local markets. Eighty years ago, a Bavarian baker’s wife helped save the life of a beloved uncle who lived on the outskirts of Munich, the capital of Bavaria. He must have had an unconscious affinity for Bavarian bakers and was elated to find his favorite bread in Dover’s Bavarian Bakery. We would make the 90+ mile roundtrip from Newark occasionally, buying several loaves and freezing some and giving others to friends. He met the owner and even offered to increase her business by selling her bread in the Newark area, but she was not interested in his idea and seemed rather cold. We learned to adapt to the bakery’s hours – it closes at 3 o’clock PM. We also learned to order bread in advance because it would be sold out early in the day. Over the years, there were several snafus -closed on Mondays, fouled up orders, etc. but we took them in good stride until last week, when my husband ordered four loaves on the day before our planned trip. No one answered the phone, and he left our order on the bakery’s answering machine. Several hours later, he called again and again had to repeat his order to the answering machine. We arrived in the early afternoon on the following day only to find that all the bread had been sold was and that his order had been ignored. He began to lose his cool and instead of an apology, he received a tirade by the German owner who reprimanded him for not ordering it the same day. The woman obviously seemed to despise him and her manner reminded me of the Nazis. (I had already spent over twenty dollars on a few over-priced but delicious pastries.) Later, my husband told me that her manner had also reminded him of Nazis. The ordeal was doubly embarrassing – we had along brought a friend, a German language teacher. She had been anxious to visit this bakery and expected to get, among other things, one of the four loaves. We still have the end of a previously purchased but well-preserved loaf, but he says that somehow, it doesn’t taste the same anymore. He vowed never to set foot into that bakery again and will not hesitate to relate his experience to others. Ditto for our...
Read moreI have been a regular at this bakery for a few months now. Every week I would buy their black and white button cookies which are the best cookies I have ever eaten. Sadly I don't think I will continue to go to this bakery due to their service when there is a problem. I ordered and paid for 24 button cookies. After I got to my car I opened the box to count them and noticed I only had 18 i didnt want to touch the cookies with my dirty hands so. I immediately went back in (less than a minute after walking out) and let the cashier know the issue. The employee that packed the cookies said that he put the right amount in with an attitude so the owner hastily peeked in the box and poked at the layered cookies with gloves on. She said that she counted 24 and I apologized for what I thought was my miscount. When I got home I opened the box to remove the cookies and I had a total of 18. I called the bakery to see if they could help and the manager who I spoke with told me he had to verify it with the owner. I let him know that was no problem. He put me on hold for a few minutes and let me know that she was not answering. I asked him if he wanted me to bring them back and he said no because he needed a way to verify that when they were sold that yhe right amount was put in the box. I asked him if they had cameras that they could review and he got defensive amd said they did but he wasn't going to waste his time looking through the footage. I let him know that I was not happy with the way that he was handling the situation. I told him that if he would check the footage, he would see that the employee only put 18 cookies in the box and I was more than happy to wait while they reviewed it. The manager then offered me a partial refund of my order to "make it right" but I honestly believe that he just wanted me off the phone at this point. I appreciate the refund that I got but I am disappointed that this is the way that I was treated. I have recommended this bakery to friends and family and I hope that they don't experience this when they visit. I will not...
Read moreI have lived in the area for less than a year. I was VERY EXCITED when I first saw the Bavarian Bakery near my new home. I have visited several times now and have recommended it to my family and new friends in the area. The desserts are all to die for!
Unfortunately I had an unpleasant customer service experience this afternoon that will make me think twice about going back. I ordered 2 deli sandwiches, one of which was just liverwurst on a roll. The girl ringing me up rang it up at a full charge of a sandwich (8.50) I was going to ask if there was a slightly reduced rate since it was just literally the meat on a roll but I didn't want to be difficult or cause a scene so I swallowed that one. I then asked for a "small" German potato salad. I've never had it before, wasn't sure if I was going to like it and really just wanted a taste of it. The girl brought over a large 1 pound container of potato salad. I said, "Wow, that's a small?!" The girl working next to her even said that's not a small. The girl ringing me up said that they were out of small containers and that's all they had. She even shot her coworker a look. After I paid, the girl ringing me up offered (with major attitude) to take half out and refund me the money. At that rate there were several other customers waiting in line behind me and I didn't want to make any further scene. I feel as though maybe the girl was just trying to drive sales up for the day. (10.95 for 1lb of potato salad.) Sure, you may have helped your sales today but you've lost future sales going forward. I'll definitely be visiting the French Bakery in town going forward.
P. S. - on a past visit I had ordered a box of assorted pastries and asked for an extra box as I was giving one pastry to a friend and they charged me for the empty box!!
Buyer be ware, they really nickle and dime you here. In this economy we all gotta watch what we're being charged and actually...
