Update: 2022 Years later, after a pandemic and some life and travel experience, I've updated my rating to 4 stars instead of two. After my first visit, I returned, again and again for the vegan options and delicious agua frescas. I became a regular and even hosted a few work events here. I feel I initially rated the small business unfairly, and now having visited Mexico, realize that lightning fast service is purely an Americanized expectation. The food is great and home cooked, the chips and salsa are excellent and the owner is friendly and accommodating. They are welcoming to pets on the patio and hold true to the traditions of Mexico. Come here when you aren't in a rush, order everything (their specialty is the enchiladas) and treat your server kindly.
2018: I really want to like this place because it's so close to my house and has a ton of vegan options and has great reviews but my first experience was not a good one. I came an hour before close on a Saturday and there was only two tables of other guests so they weren't slammed but I immediately noticed that the majority of the tables had not been bussed and the floor was messy with food under all the tables. The server acted exasperated when we entered and when other guests entered so I'm assuming he had a hard day and was ready to go home. He wasn't unfriendly but I definitely did not feel comfortable or welcomed. There was no ambient noise so the two of us chatted very quietly while feeling awkward that it was dead silent in there other than the crunching of tortilla chips from other tables. The food came out within a reasonable time frame and was decent. I would like to try more things on the menu to give it a chance for rave reviews but if I didn't live so close, I wouldn't make any...
Read moreI came in with my family and immediate got a sense of ill service. The place was COMPLETELY empty, but we decided to give the place a chance (even though the place was warm, didn’t seem to have AC turned on). The waitress was as rude from the start, not really acknowledging our table, even though we were the only people in the restaurant besides her. The real issue arose when it came down to ordering. The waiter got a real attitude when I asked her is I could mix the toppings on a plate order. She told me they did not allow for toppings to be different, I told her I’d be willing to pay extra and she refused. I proceeded to ask for more time to review the menu since I didn’t want the original selection due to not being able to mix toppings. She rolled her eyes and expressed impatience. She seemed frustrated and not willing to listen. We decided to leave.
The service we received maybe the reason there wasn’t a soul of a customer in the entire place. I do not recommend, we cross the street to eat at another Mexican place and they had great service and offered a space where we...
Read moreKahlo's is a colorful Mexican restaurant with Frida Kahlo's artwork hung throughout. It's a visually entertaining place to sit and enjoy a meal. We were very excited to try their variety of vegan enchiladas; the mushroom enchiladas were unique, the potatoe and zucchini enchiladas were delish but each was a little pricey. Overall, my favorite dish from Kahlo's turned out to be their authentic Mexican guacamole appetizer; it was fresh and hand made with mortar and pestle. Their guac was created with ripe avocados, crisp/cool onions, fresh cilantro and lime juice. The chips were homemade; they were thick and crispy without being oily. Our waiter was very sweet. The only gripe I have is that we went in for lunch on a Saturday in July and our waiter was the only one taking care of customers in the restaurant. He got busy throughout our stay and wasn't able to tend to us very well throughout the second half of lunch. Bc of this, it took a long time to pay and leave and it got very hot in the booth we were sitting at by...
