As a level 7 Google local guide, I pride myself personally in creating unbiased honest reviews on any establishment I visit as I plan on doing now with Matsuhisa.
I have a very low amount of 3* and under reviews because I personally use google reviews to judge where I eat and obviously, like most of us humans, I don't want to eat at bad restaurants.
Personally I am a massive sushi lover so it was natural for me to be drawn to a restaurant of such high class that serves the (IMO) delicacy.
I ordered 5 things as follows, Soft Shelled Crab Roll, Filet Mignon, Pellegrino Sparkling Water, Desert Bento Box, Canard Cabernet.
Let's start with the sparkling water.. Just kidding, it's Pellegrino, you know what it tastes like haha!
$9.50 (found the same bottle at King Soopers for $2.50 but you're paying for the environment and experience I guess but still, a little RIDICULOUS)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐛 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥 (6 pieces) was exceptional. The flavors that I experienced, the texture, the smells, all added up to an extremely pleasant experience leaving my mouth watering before, during, and after consumption.
$14.00 (well worth it)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐧 was honestly the crown jewel of my experience here. I have had a LOT of filets in my life, and this one was easily in the top 3. The medium well inside was cooked properly and to perfection, it was dressed with vegetables including of which mushrooms.. I do not like mushrooms.. But I was willing to take a chance at a restaurant of this caliber and was vastly impressed! They added tremendously to the flavor and experience of the filet! This meal had me almost licking my plate CLEAN! I have had few meals I've obsessed over for days.
$38.00 (100% worth it)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐨𝐱 was absolutely phenomenal. It comes with a small, fist sized, chocolate molten lava cake and scoop of Matcha Ice Cream. The lava cake had a perfect amount of sweetness that was not overbearing at all, and was coupled PERFECTLY with the ice cream which was a very mild sweetness but extremely creamy and was generally a very good dairy product. I feel like a lot of restaurants overdo the molten lava cake by jacking the sugar contents up and almost making them unbearable because of how sweet they are, but Matsuhisa does it right! I could eat a few of these without being overwhelmed in my sweet tooth.
$13.00 (you're crazy if you like desert and don't get this)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭 was amazing coupled with the Filet Mignon. I don't know a lot about wine, so I'll leave the review to wine experts but I can definitely recommend it with the Filet Mignon.
$27.00 (I assume it was worth it because it tastes really smooth and was coupled PERFECTLY with my meal)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the restaurant and food they served, they recommended I get the Cabernet with my Filet Mignon and were spot on! The manager (or owner I'm not sure which, I neglected to ask) came to us in the middle of our meal and asked if everything was to our satisfaction, which was very sublime. All staff wore masks and requested we wore masks untill we sat down at our table. One staff member even asked me if I'd like the blinds to be opened to let more light in since he saw I was taking photos which was very appreciated and kind.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 was as expected from a restaurant of this caliber. Everything from the outside, inside walls, tables, bar, bathrooms, decoration, lighting, and staff dress screamed class and prestige.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 of my experience here was that the restaurant was well worth my finishing bill of $101.50 (before tax and tip) and besides the Pellegrino price which I would hardly even consider effecting the five star rating I'm giving, this was an experience I won't regret. I'll be back! (And not buying the Pellegrino haha!)
(Included in my photos are a seaweed salad my friend ordered and his sushi rolls that he also said...
Read moreIt pains me greatly to write a non-fabulous review of Matsuhisa, as I have raved about it so many times to anyone who would listen, but unfortunately our last visit left a bad taste in our mouths. We have always done the Omakase, and the previous times we have come the food has been spectacular, and the service even more so. This time, we again opted for the Omakase only this time our waitress told us we couldn’t submit any preferences, the chef gives us what he wants and would only avoid allergies. This was strange because prior to this visit we were able to put in a few tastes we like and do not like to tailor the experience a little. We didn’t really mind because every time we have come, we have LOVED every dish, so we weren’t super worried. The first dish comes out and it’s a salad hand wrap that was absolutely divine, then a 3 fish sashimi that was also amazing, after that there was only one other course we really liked, and the rest was just okay. At any other restaurant I wouldn’t be too upset, but it was not on par with the price and certainly nowhere close to the quality of our previous visits. Our waitress did not come over very often (the girl and guy delivering our dishes were more helpful than the waitress) and when she did come over, she would ask how everything was and then quickly walk away before we could order more drinks or ask for anything. The final dish before dessert was a veggie puree foie gras and it was absolutely disgusting. As someone who loves foie gras I was very excited, but after one bite I couldn’t stomach eating any more. The Foie Gras itself was similar consistency to a lump of spam, and the veggie puree was bland with an odd taste. Not a single person at our table took more than one bite and even our waitress commented that when she cleared the plates. We expressed we did not like it at all and she just brushed it off and walked away. We all kind of assumed she would offer something, but then our dessert came out and at that point it seemed onerous to bring it back up (the dessert was very good though). Overall, the experience was super upsetting as we live in MD but come to visit our CO friends regularly and Matsuhisa is always on our list. It is unlikely we will ever be back but if we do, I don’t think any of us will ever want to do the Omakase again which makes me so sad and is...
Read moreOne of the most delicious and wonderful dining experiences I’ve ever had. First things first, they sat us almost an hour early because we came in too early for our reservation. I also asked for a more private seat and I received that. I appreciate their accommodations for us. Our servers were so friendly and had some wonderful suggestions on menu items to steer us in the right direction. Really happy they did that because this is the fanciest place I’ve been to. To start, I HAD to try the Spicy Tuna and the Tuna Tacos. The tacos came out first and they had this yummy avocado mousse-like base with fresh tuna on top and a gyoza shell. Super messy but my mouth is watering again just talking about it. The highlight out of our whole meal, though, was the spicy tuna. It comes with crispy rice squares, spicy tuna, and a sauce. Putting them all together was the most delicious combination of ingredients I’ve ever tasted and I’ll never forget it. Next came out our salmon sashimi. This was not on the menu, but was recommended to us by our server. It had very strong sesame flavors (perhaps a bit too strong) but was still very yummy paired with fresh fish and chives. Next we got Nigiri and Maki rolls as more of a main course. The nigiri was a combination, including different fish, shrimp, and even octopus. I got a salmon roll that was just so beautifully made. The highlight of our sushi platter was the Spicy Tuna Roll. It is lightly battered on the top with tempura and had a spicy sauce inside with cucumber and avocado, and it is drizzled with eel sauce. They also offer this roll classic without all the yummy goodness if you are boring like that. Next we HAD to try the Wagyu (this is the real stuff) at $38 an ounce with a 2oz minimum. For the real deal, this was worth a taste. An added extra bonus was that they brought out a hot rock for us to cook our wagyu on to our liking, super fun!! There are no dessert menus, so you have to listen carefully as the servers tell you what’s up. I didn’t listen past the words “lava cake” unfortunately because it sounded too good. It was too good. Best lava cake I’ve ever had and a deliciously light ice cream as well. The macaron was perfect too!! This was such a good experience that it’s worth whatever price tag. Truly the best birthday gift I’ve...
