On Saturday my wife and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary at 801 Chophouse. While my wife and I were still dating, we came across the Chophouse from Denver restaurant week promotion. Since then we have been coming here for anniversaries, birthdays, visitors, you name it, this is where we go and for good reason.
On this particular visit, we were lucky to have Mack as our server. My wife and I appreciated his presence without a push. He was able to inform us on the seasonal menu as well as off menu items, but at no point did we feel like we had to get or try something. As a couple who go a few times a year, we know what we like but are also interested in what may be new or seasonal. To celebrate we wanted a bottle of wine, and Mack’s suggestion of The Prisoner was a great call. We like a light red, and this California Pinot was exactly what we were looking for.
While the new wagyu options sounded delicious, we opted for filets. I usually get the 16 oz ribeye but decided to go with a filet because it’s been a while since I have had it and I’m glad I did! My wife normally get the filet, but asked for it butterflied since she likes her cuts a little more done. My filet was a nice warm pink and I couldn’t be happier.
While the steak is the star of the show, their sides are what bring us back time and time again. The family style sharing for two means we have sides for another meal, or two as left overs. We tried the brussel sprouts for the first time and were very impressed. We also got the mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Outside of those sides we historically like getting the hash browns, Mac and cheese, asparagus, and scalloped potatoes (we love our starchy carbs!).
Mack was generous enough to get us a dessert in celebration of our anniversary, and we went with the seasonal s’mores and oh boy what a treat! It’s enough for two but we also got a trio of ice cream, as they always have a fun flavor to try, this time it was sweet corn.
Overall, my wife and I appreciate the service, the attention to detail, the right amount of casual and quality of food. Each and every time, big party or just the two of us, 801 Chophouse has taken care of us. I look forward to...
Read moreSo my husband and I wanted to come celebrate the before new year because I have a procedure at the hospital on New Year’s Eve and I wanted a steak.. we’ve been to several steak restaurants so 801 was on my list.
The ambiance is beautiful of course 801 is in the heart of Cherry creek off 1st and connected to the elaborate mall.
Our reservations were at 4:30 we got there at 4:38 and were seated right away! Our seating was so intimate and nice with the Christmas decorations so pretty. Our waitress Shantell was really nice and professional and she explained all the cuts of meat and the history behind the Wagyu beef etc. We eventually ordered our meals.
To the dinner: we both ordered Caesar salads which were fresh and delicious!! I don’t like anchovies so my husband took mine and he said how delicious they were - oh and don’t let me forget about the warm, amazing bread and butter!!! It was perfect for my salad and Coke !!!
My husband ordered prime rib, I ordered the New York 14oz and we both split the asparagus and al gratin potatoes. So how was it? It was ok. The steak could have had more flavor for the price of $68 and more heat! The potatoes should be titled Crunchy cheese potatoes because the topping of crumbled cheese/breading had our potatoes dried out. I think with the steak what would compliment it if you are going to have algratin potatoes- make sure they are made with love - thin layered potatoes with amazing cheeses and Alfredo sauce, creamy and hot when served, to help the presentation as well. The asparagus weren’t bad they had a little butter taste as well.
For the price of $230 it should have caused me to want more! However it allowed me the opportunity to experience the steak and yet I don’t crave to come back but….. but that dang on bread and my Caesar salad was the BOMB.COM!!!!! Delicious!!!
Our server made sure we had enough water and beverages and she was very pleasant so that did help the experience.
Off to the next steak restaurant and check it off the list to say it’s nice but love needs to be in...
Read moreI had been given recommendations to try 801 a few times and stopped in just before Xmas to give it a try. I made reservations and had to wait 5-10min to get seated as to be expected during the holiday season. At first glance, the restaurant appeared to be classy and had an old-timey feel to it. Our server did a great job of explaining the menu to us and brought out a tray of raw steaks to explain to my girlfriend and I the different cuts. I was impressed by this old school tactic and reveled in the fact that every steak was USDA Prime; a rarity even for upscale steakhouses these days. We ordered lobster corn dogs that were a good start. Next came the prime rib that our server recommended along with our potatoes au gratin and Brussels sprouts. The sides were delicious but the steak fell flat. It was cooked perfectly (medium-rare) but completely lacked flavor. I took a few bites and couldn’t help but be underwhelmed by what I expected to be an amazing entree. The server did a great job of observing my lack of enthusiasm and asked how everything was. I responded that I wasn’t very into the steak and he apologized. I asked about the preparation and he said they simply salted the prime rib and roasted it which I found to be a bit boring considering my years as a chef and cooking several prime ribs. The server was kind enough to talk to his manager and get us a round of the tasty malbecs we were enjoying and we finished with a yummy Death by Chocolate Cake. All in all, the meal was still good with great service and ambiance to match, but I couldn’t help but think that it was like going to a good production except the star of the show didn’t show up. When you are paying a premium for a good cut of meat, you expect it to be outstanding. In this case, the prime rib simply was not. I would consider giving this place one more chance, but with all of the other wonderful options in Denver, it would be a hard to give 801 Chophouse a...
