Great place for lunch, hitting during your Tennyson visit, or before an Oriental show. Great vibe and energy. Most recently, I had the patty melt and it was great. I also had the cheese fries and they were unhealthy and fantastic. I also love the Giggity IPA. I feel there are too many sandwiches on the menu, but you could have worse problems. I recommend! Adding to review since I was there last night. This place has tasty sandwiches. I still say they have a few too many items on their menu and would give them 4 stars, but... Kim and Reece were great bartenders, I asked them to simply give me some sandwich with capicola and prosciutto and they made it happen, the Giggity IPA is a go-to for me, and they streamed Billy Strings live (and always have Dead, Panic, Phish, etc. playing). It is on the fun street of Tennyson, across from The Oriental, and I always have a great experience here. Five stars.

Have been coming here regularly for a few years. The food is fine, the service is usually great, but the atmosphere has always felt off and I guess now I know why. Have heard rumblings over the years that the owner, Dan, is a real pain in the ass, but I always let it fall on deaf ears (even while seeing the turnover of staff). I probably would have done the same with this most recent TikTok post, but then Dan had to go and publicly show everyone his true colors. The email screenshots and his responses to negative reviews (whether legitimate or not) prove his lack of professionalism. To be clear, this IS a legitimate review and as a neighbor and patron (see screenshots of the money I've spent here in the last year) I can no longer support this ownership.

The space here is really nice and there's lots of room to hang out. There's a large patio and dining area, a bar, and a counter service sandwich bar. They also do table service if that's more your speed. They have a bunch of brewing equipment, but they didn't have any of their own beers on tap yet. They did have selections from Elevation, Comrade, Call to Arms, Ska, and other solid breweries though. At the very least whoever is picking the lineup has good taste. The sandwiches we had were tasty and reasonably priced. They weren't anything super fancy, but it's actually kinda refreshing for the neighborhood considering almost every new offering is trying to out hipster the last one. Nice friendly neighborhood spot.

So, two buddies and myself went to this sandwich shop. First, let me state that the sandwich was amazing.

But, here is my story of our day at The Grateful Gnome. My buddy John (not his name) lives in the Denver area. My buddy Fred and I are visiting from Minnesota to see Dead and Co. So John said, let's go here for lunch after our flight.

We all ordered the #20, except different toppings. John ordered it with mayo, oil and vinegar and that's about it. I went next and added chipotle mayo and onions and tomatoes and bacon. Fred took the onions off, and added pickle chips.

My John joked to us that he had been there twice and twice got his sandwich wrong. And, today it was the same as the last 2 times. His sandwich had onions. So did Fred's sandwich.

Now, they asked very respectfully, to have the sandwiches fixed.

We did not expect miracles. Just nothing extra if you know what I mean.

At this point the server had come to our table twice to confirm both John and Fred's orders. (Which seemed odd)

When the sandwiches came back. John flips the bun over and we does he see, and onion. John cannot stand onion or onion residual taste. (Which that's him.)

He politely asked for a "new" sandwich. Fred didn't care and ate his.

The server again came back to confirm the order.

Once delivered the manager came with the server to deliver the sandwich. He manager served the sandwich and stated sorta oddly. "Does this meet your expectations?". John looks, yep.

The manager says, we will comp your sandwich.

Later they deliver the bill. All three sandwiches are on the bill. Nothing is said. We ask, why wasn't John's sandwich comped. The server states "the manager changed his mind."

For anyone who reads this not once, was our table anything other than polite and respectful. But the manager and the server made us feel, really weird like it is all our fault. Huh, and why do you need to check our order 4 times?

Super strange!!!

My sandwich was fantastic, it really was. But it was...

Initial greeting was impolite. We asked if it was ok if we could place a to go order and eat at a table in the corner because we had a show to attend across the street with a time frame. We were hoping to eat part of it there and part of it later (people do this all the time) but we were discouraged to do so. We then ordered a to go order with intentions of just leaving. While sitting and waiting for our to go, a staff member came over with an order of fries and asked if we ordered them (which we did with our to go order) so we said yes and she placed them down on the table and walked away. A young lady with dark red hair approached us and said that if we didn’t order food then we shouldn’t be eating it. We explained to her that we ordered multiple things to go and we didn’t think too much of the fries being brought out before the rest. The way she approached us was extremely rude and you could tell she was angry and directing it towards us. The way she automatically assumed that we were in the wrong was appalling and I’ve never been talked to by a server like that before. We had already payed for our food and we were just waiting to take it out the door since they don’t want us to eat in there. It shouldn’t matter if the food is in a paper bag vs on a plate. Very shocked by the negative customer...

Stopped in hitting the breweries here in the Berkeley area. Decided on Grateful Gnome for the lunch spot and bonus brewery. Very pedestrian beers, nothing super exciting here although the prickly pear saison was commendable. Sandwiches... well we had the tuna, a cheeseburger, an italian, a bacon egg, and a veggie. Also had the gravy cheese fries (outstanding) Decent sandwiches, but nothing earth shattering, certainly not worth the price. The tuna and the burger were for kids, which on the menu advertises $5 half sandwiches for kids. Neither of these were "qualifying" sandwiches. I'll give you the burger (even though i won't understand not having a kids burger), but seriously you can't make half a tuna? Additionally, we waited 15 minutes before even being greeted. Then waited almost 45 minutes for the above sandwiches. It was not busy. Seems excessive for a sandwich place to take 45 minutes for sandwiches when you aren't busy. Maybe 8 tables sitting when we left, about 5 when we walked in at 145. Overall, foods palatable but not outstanding(poutine the exception), beers overall are non impressive. Friendly place, decent atmosphere, just gotta get a hang on service and quality, or bring the prices down to meet the...
