While I was in the Washington Park Neighborhood, I decided to stop into Wash Perk for some breakfast and a cup of coffee. I sure am glad that I did!
Walking into Wash Perk, it was obvious that this coffee shop boasted a home like ambiance. From draperies on the windows to the knick knacks placed throughout. Wash Perk just feels like grandma's house.
I ordered a 'here cup' and a ready made bowl of oatmeal (just add water!).
Wash Perk offers an average variety of pastries and baked goods, including bagels, breads, and cookies.
Be careful because you can very easily miss the large cooler at the end of the counter that has yogurts and even breakfast burritos.
Wash Perk has at least one (1) self service toaster and microwave for warming your food. Although different, I didn't mind.
The coffee that Wash Perk was serving on this particular morning was delicious and is what could set this shop apart from others. I opted for a light roast (just to get my feet wet) and I was pleasantly surprised!
In all, for a cup of coffee and a bowl of oatmeal, I paid ~ $8.00, which is about what I would expect to spend at mainstream coffee shops (except I might get a banana as well!).
The ambiance was where Wash Perk really separated itself! Although Wash Perk was busy (people were constantly in and out), I was able to sit and read a book without being disturbed (and I was sitting near the counter).
I would definitely recommend Wash Perk based solely on food and coffee!
The only reason that I did not give Wash Perk 5 stars is because the staff was really no different in terms of welcoming when compared to other shops (in fact, it may have been less). However, I will add that the service was really no different than other local shops in the area. I have definitely received better service from the...
Read more@WashPerkCoffee Great location for a coffee shop. Spacious both inside and outside. Artwork, photo collages and trinkets retasked arty 'junk' adorn the walls.
The iced Americano was strong and delicious. It gave me a nice jolt. The oatmeal bar thingie was tasty and hearty.
It really is all about location. The Washington Park neighborhood is historic and awesome. It was fairly busy for a weekday morning, a steady stream of people from all walks of life. It appears that joggers flock here after a run around Washington Park due to the sweat stained scantily clad work out gear apparel worn by some patrons. Other patrons wore cute summery sandals showing off their pedicure best.
I laughed at the particular orders of some of these folks. Decaf light iced chai tea at 100.22°F? Breakfast bar cut into thirds and heated for 12 seconds only in the microwave? Medium hot coffee grounds with a pat of butter on the side? Decaffeinated sugar free vanilla skim milk latte with extra heavy cream?! Why spend the money? Just drink water.
They have a nice selection of cold beverages in coolers, from Dry Soda Co to Big B's juices to Naked juices to burritos and sandwiches.
Overall a quaint coffee house with amazing people watching. Go to spy the social oddities representing all classes of society mixed with some snobbish beverage ordering (typical of all coffee shops). You'll be...
Read moreI was very disappointed with my visit. I had fond memories of a previous visit pre-Covid. At that time, it was a nice neighborhood coffee shop, and I looked forward to returning. Upon arrival, I was perplexed that I could not order inside as it was before Covid. I had to stand in line outside to then take my coffee inside. After I placed my order, I was asked what I wanted to give as my tip verbally, which meant that all the people around me and in line would hear my answer. That feels inappropriate and a bit shaming to have to respond with a verbal answer instead of using a touch pad privately. I then sat inside, but the interior was drab compared to the way it had been before. My friend who joined me asked when ordering why we couldn't order inside at the counter anymore and the response was that they thought it worked best for them to have everyone outside. Well, it is clear that the place is not concerned about friendly customer service or making the experience enjoyable or comfortable for the customer. I hope some day soon they can return to valuing the customer and having a nice internal environment, but I can't imagine returning when there are so many fabulous and welcoming coffee shops...
