A deep dive into Zen Asian Sushi Bar & Grill

Location : Northfield Stapleton near the Yankee Candle store 2022 Visit Have been one of our go-to in Northfield Stapleton. This visit, ordered: Basil Fried Rice (a fave!) Tender Chicken & Pork Sizzling Plate Love that they offer coffee in the menu! No wait on a Tuesday, mid-afternoon. The place has remained the same. Still a favorite food destination. (Original / 1st Review) This place used to be Ling and Louis, another Asian restaurant, which offered more items on the Chinese food line, whereas, Zen appears to have equal focus on "Shanghainese" fare AND Japanese (sushis, tempuras, etc.). First visit, came for lunch and considering it was mid-week, there were quite a number of diners. Ambiance upon entry is very unpretentious but with understated taste. Miso soup, Basil Fried Rice with Chicken and Shrimp and the Mongolian Triple Delight. Both entrees were really really good, that my husband and I were already planning a return visit. Unfortunately, the Miso soup was a letdown. After 3 spoonfuls, I just couldn't appreciate lukewarm soup. Rhanie, our server, had to ask if the soup was not to my liking and was fantastic in her handling of the situation. Might I say, Rhanie would be another reason for a return visit. 5⭐ customer service! What the Miso lacked, the coffee more than made up for. Unlike a lot of restaurant coffee, theirs can equal Starbucks in strength, flavor and taste! Highly recommend and we will definitely be returning. Update: Return Visit - April 2019 Weekend mid-afternoon. No wait but quite a lot of diners. This visit, got Potstickers as appetizer, and Honey Walnut Shrimp and Curry Chicken and Pork, our main entrees with an order of Basil Fried Rice to go (we loved it from our first visit). Both the shrimp and the curry were winners. If you love spicy food, the curry will please you. Service was good and looking forward to more visits to try other items. Highly recommend to try them out.

The sushi was good, but not great. If you’ve ever had “great” sushi, you will know what I mean. If you are not familiar with professional quality sushi, I’m sure you will enjoy it just fine. Everything tasted good, but the nori was stale lending an unpleasant texture to most of the sushi. This happens when the nori is exposed to air and allowed to absorb moisture(like a bag of chips left open). OR the nori got too wet. Many sushi chefs coat their hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking to their hands. Most likely, the chef had too much water on their hands when making the rolls. The tuna inside the rolls was not Ahi. A spicy tuna roll is Cucumber, Avocado, and Ahi(typically dressed up with chives, spices, and chili sauce). It all just seemed cheaply made and dressed down. They have a large menu that stands on its own with plenty to choose from. Including both Thai and Japanese entrées. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the staff was friendly and we enjoyed good service. However, a restaurant couldn’t receive 5 stars without the food itself meeting that quality. If I were to revisit this place, I’d probably try one of their entrees from their main menu. For sushi, I’d seek out a new place to try.

We went to this Asian restaurant on out way back from DICK’S sports goods park for dinner. I am happy we went this amazing place. The ambience was great, they outside and indoor sitting arrangements. The inside decor music was very pleasing. They have bar and separate food zones. We were happy to find a wide variety of food options from all major asian cuisines and great variety of drinks. Hasly came to serve us and she is a great person, she gave us time and also helped us to select from the menu. We were happy with their great service and quality of food. Prices were also moderate. We had great experience and looking forward to visiting them again and definitely recommend Zen Asian cuisine.
