I visited this restaurant on July 18. I immediately noticed how dirty and unkempt the walls, baseboards and windowsills were but I prayed over my food and decided to give it a try. Big mistake: I ordered shrimp and grits and scrambled eggs. The shrimp and grits had only 3 shrimp, plus one shrimp tail that was missing the meat portion. The grits had a oily film settling on top that was unappetizing. The grits themselves were of decent consistency but lacked flavor overall. The eggs were just scrambled eggs with a special seasoning on top. They were scrambled hard—not my preference but they were okay. The waitress made no mention of the up charge for shrimp and grits… As soon as I received my food, I was attacked by FLIES—not one or two, an unacceptable plethora of them. There was clearly evidence of infestation or maggots close by. I killed two at my table and turned around to notice there were several dead flies on the windowsill behind me, one on the wall and a dead one in the flower water at my table. Yuck!!! In my opinion, flies are the nastiest and dirtiest insects ever. I couldn’t finish my food….I informed the waitress of this issue and she stated that she would bring this to the manager’s attention. She also noted that they kept the back door open. I am confused as to why when there are different apparatuses-screens and such, to keep flies out but still catch a breeze, etc. A different person came to collect my bill- no evidence of being a manager. This was confusing. I also noticed that my original bill that was handed to me was $17. The receipt that was returned to me after my card was swiped was $21.42. They made sure to include gratuity without my consent. She new lady returned the receipt and asked me to sign the receipt but there was no official signature line. This was very sketchy but I didn’t have the energy to put up a fight after fighting flies while trying to eat. Although my initial waitress was okay (besides the misinformation about the upcharge) it was very confusing and unprofessional to have a different person at the end charge my card for a different amount to ensure a tip. Overall, this place needs a good bleach bath, deep cleaning, new paint and pest control. Customer service training would also help. I wanted to enjoy it here badly as I live very close by and was happy to hear about mimosas being served. However, I will not return. I do not patronize dirty restaurants. Minor updates and communication can make a...
Read moreDO NOT GO HERE. That is, until major changes are made in how the place is run. Ignore the good reviews, not the bad ones like I did. I thought "more good reviews than bad, it must be okay" oh how wrong I was. This place is very far from okay.
Food takes WELL over 1 hour. I went around lunch time on a weekend, sure it was busy but it's not a huge place to begin with. In my almost 2 hours there I saw no less than 4 tables walk-out after ordering because their food hadn't come and they had waited over an hour. Whenever this happened some big guy from the back came running out and tried to chase after them, real classy.
Our food took about an 1hour 15 minutes to come out. Pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and some potatoes. It doesn't get any more basic than that! Even then only HALF our food came out, they didn't say anything about it, and just brought the other half almost 10 minutes later without a word. There was zero communication from the staff. If they had been honest with people about how behind the kitchen was people might not have walked-out.
The staff were all in leggings, not a single person in actual pants in the entire establishment. This is a restaurant, not a gym! Act like it.
Even after all this, I waited it out for my food and it was...mediocre at best. The corn pancakes barely had any corn in them. The bacon was merely fine. The scrambled eggs, well....they were terrible. Overcooked, and just drenched in what tasted like garlic powder. I'm not sure how you can mess up scrambled eggs but i'm also not sure how it can take over an hour to make them in the first place. The potatoes with green pepper had virtually no peppers and the potatoes were overcooked.
To the owner: I wish you success, I really do, and that's why I leave this review. I am not a complainer, a whiner, a hater, or anything of the sort. I am being truthful, the experience at your restaurant today was among the worst I have had eating out in my lifetime. If you do not fix this, your restaurant will not survive. You need entirely new management, a new kitchen staff, and you need to re-train all your waiting staff on how to handle themselves when...
Read moreFamily-style breakfast comfort food. Awesome place. We were there, by coincidence, on Father’s Day, which probably added to the usual big Sunday numbers, so it was crowded. We were lucky and came during a slight let-up so there was only about a 10 minute wait for a table. And they have a nice gallery area for people waiting for a table.
This isn’t fast food (and I can see from some of the other reviews that some diners can't quite get their heads around this). This is good individually prepared heaps of breakfast comfort food tastiness. A sign cautioned that on weekends, orders take 45 minutes or more, and they were good to their word (i.e., more). But customers were relaxed and happy, and the staff was attentive and efficient and kept our cups full with an above average coffee. (Thank you, Brianna!) This is a great place to go with people whose company you enjoy and who you want to spend time with – and there were a number of groups of 6-8 people there, some multi-generational family, some multiple families getting together.
Chicken and waffles is the specialite du maison, but it’s not our fave so we opted for an omelet (spinach, mushrooms, and lots of feta), potatoes (simply but yummy, lightly seasoned but still tasting of fresh potato), maple sausage (double yum!), and fruit (melon, pineapple, and grapes). There are lots of crepes and pancake variations on the menu as well as the chicken and waffles, and there’s a vegetarian sausage available as well.
Orders are family style: so for the two of us, we ordered four things (omelet, potatoes, sausage, and fruit) and got double portions. More people, more dishes to sample together. The place is about eating together with as many other people as possible.
There was good live music (jazz keyboard and vocals) the entire time we were there. The place itself is spacious, seems to be a largely unrenovated and slightly scruffy former music club, and has a sort of late 40s early 50s feel to it. Felt a little New Orleans to me, though I’m not sure why.
All in all, a great place and I’ll be going back. So good, that I may try the chicken...
