I started coming to HopCat back in Feburary for karaoke and my first visit was fun. I went back 3 more times and it was cool. By my 3rd visit I invited a group of people, there was no issue. By the 4th visit, they abruptly change the rules for karaoke night concerning seating availablity and harrassed us about tables. They claimed the whole upstairs to be booked and there were no tables available. 🙄 it took them 10 minutes to seat us as a group together. They told us we had to reserve our tables from now on. And the whole night only 10 ppl came outside of us and they were eating and leaving, the whole place was not reserved. Strike 1 As the night continued, nobody ever showed up at the tables we initially sat at which instantly drew a red flag🤔 so we decided to ask the manager why were we given such difficult time when no one was hardly there? She was very nonchalant about the whole thing. The whole night it was crickets for karaoke. Few ppl were in and out on and off all night but no one stayed except our group.
We have been a karaoke group for over 20+yrs and have never had an issue like this anywhere especially in Detroit! I went 2 weeks afterwards, alone, and sat at a small table with 2 chairs. I went to the restroom and when I came out, someone had moved my chair across the room against the wall with my coat still hanging on the back of the chair. I asked the wait staff who moved my chair because it was rude to do that with someone's coat hanging on it. Mind you, it was another cricket Saturday karaoke night , so only a few people were there. One of the staff told me the manager moved my chair. When I asked which one he did not give me a direct name, he named 2 different people. I was annoyed and made it clear to them to please never touch my things again! I felt whomever moved my chair was trying to get a negative reaction out of me. The place was light all night, I've never seen it crowed upstairs on karaoke night. That was strike 2 2 weeks later, which brings us to Saturday March 29th 2025. I reserved a table of 8 because online would not allow me to go over 10. The reservation went through, I called to confirm and they claim they did not get the reservation, yet I got 3 email confirmations and a text message sent to my phone. However, I called to tell them we had more than 8 ppl coming. Some of the ppl got there before I did, and they gave them a hard time AGAIN before seating them.
When I arrived, I showed them the emails from the confirmation, they still denied they got the confirmation on their end. They accomodated for the extra ppl, but the waiter was rude to the table, was not attentive but only to a few ppl at the table, and the last 3 ppl that showed up, sat at an open table next to ours and they were asked to move because the tables were reserved. Here we go again with this bs! They moved them away from the reserved party, and once again, 3 hours later, nobody showed up to those tables! At this point everyone is getting upset at the continuous harrassment and lies about reserved tables that nobody ever shows up to sit at. They sat 2 ppl at the table where our 3 ppl were sitting, so we asked for the manager once again. She was rude, she kept overtalking and cutting me off, and I finally told her "you all act like you don't want us here, this is really starting to feel like we are being discriminated against". When I said that she got mad and continued to talk over me, and then resorted to pretend I was yelling at her🙄 and accused me of putting my hands in her face.. she was doing all of this uncesseary acting to provoke the situation but she could not, so she got more mad and asked me to leave. I told her no, I'm no going anywhere... of course she called the police as I knew she would. I sat there and patiently waited for them to arrive. They came and was polite and friendly. I explained the situation, and the officer said, the manager wants you AND YOUR PARTY to leave. It was very clear to all of us that we were correct weeks ago when we all sensed the negativity that place...
Read moreWe came in with party of 13, made a reservation. Were sat and greeted promptly. Which was good! But the service was super slow for a Wednesday at 5pm with the restaurant less than half full and our server had an attitude problem. First it took 20 minutes to get drinks from the bar and more than half our order was draft beer. We had 4 people arrive 5 minutes late from the drink order. Well they waited 10 minutes for the server to come by, then finally went to the bar to get drinks. But then was chastised (in front of our whole party) by the server for getting their drinks at the bar and not through her. WELL if you were paying attention to your section you would've seen more people arrive and could've gotten their drink order in a timely fashion. Then when we tried to order dinner we were told no shrimp or fish and chips because the fryer wasn't working. This is something that should've been told to us while we were looking at the menu, not when we were ordering. So she left for another 10 minutes then came back and took our order. While we we ordering she then gave a member of our party an attitude for not letting her order off the kids menu and she was trying to explain she just had surgery and was unable to eat a whole entree. What does it matter? she's still ordering! I watched her go to the host stand afterwards and complain to the host and was talking stuff about our party. It was obvious as I saw her say to the host "the lady with the bob haircut" and then the host proceeded to look over our table. I am manager in the restaurant industry and this was unacceptable behavior. It then took over 30 minutes to get our food. Was never asked how anything was or if we needed anything while eating dinner. Everyone complained that they needed more sauce for their sandwiches because they were dry. I think they forget to put the sauce on my reuben. Then with the checks automatic gratuity was added (which is fine because we're a large party) BUT we weren't told and she took the itemized copies of the bills when she brought back the credit cards. This is a trick done by servers to get double grats. A member of our party had to get up and ask if gratuity was included. No manager visits to the table because if there was I would've said something. Just horrible. we wont be back. The host was really nice though, she had jokes and made me smile. Two stars just for her, and her friendly demeanor. This...
Read moreYes, I would like to say that on More than several occasions, I patronize this place. My experience has come to the head of knowing this place and their waitstaff As well as the managers, have a racist problem. I come there for your karaoke and to be entertained by other people performing karaoke and to eat drink and have a merry time. But on the occasions that I came there did that did not take place you serve food to one of the people that I was there with Food was hot. His salad bowl was full to the top but the rest of us sitting at the table, food was cold. I’m assuming and going to say that that was because you thought that man was white when in fact, he was black . The next time we arrived, we were bombarded with the fact we needed to make reservations in order to be seated and enjoy our night; management made provisions for us to sit together, but it was up against the window or the wall all the way in the back knowing we were there for Karaoke. The time after that was this past weekend one of your staff recognize the man that she thought was white, when in fact, he was black and said out loud next to his black wife, “yeah honey, you come here all the time I know who you are.” Now that man doesn’t come near without his wife, so you didn’t acknowledge her.! We were told we didn’t have a reservation when in fact, one of the members of our group made a reservation. So instead of telling us that there was a reservation made for us. It just wasn’t to accommodate 15 people. They decided to tell us it wasn’t a reservation and that they were gonna go see what they could do. They seated us and the waiter that was assigned to our table was rude and had an attitude. there was a table in front of our table that got seated with Caucasian people before they can take their coats off. They had glasses of ice water. They had napkins and silverware ready at their disposal while we were still waiting on the drinks that we had ordered before we ordered our food. we’ve been told several times that we have to make reservations when in fact at first we weren’t told that, but we make the reservations and we still get bombarded with rudeness unattended and racism. I will personally not be back to this place and if you don’t like Black people then you need to get out of Detroit with your business and...
