I had a very mixed experience when I visited with my toddler yesterday. I haven't been there for about 4 years, and I noticed not a lot had changed - other than the music room having been taken away to provide space for STEM exploration toys. The major difference I had noticed is that many of the exhibits didn't work properly - or were really worn down (The metal gear turning on the lower level, the vacuum tubes with balls had the wrong ball inside [I'm thinking it was the ball from the hovering exhibit next to it, because that exhibit was missing its ball], the smaller pulley exhibit on the lower level, one of the bottle rockets had water that was constantly leaking into it - so it was hard to use, the "fight the fat" whack-a-mole style ice cream bopper only had two ice creams that popped out, the poor Jenga robot just kept moving around and then sweeping - only to barely miss the Jenga piece that was on the bottom [interfering with its sensor, I'm guessing], parts of the moving cement making machine weren't working properly, some of the machines in the "car factory" didn't seem to do anything when I pushed the buttons, the planets that you could move on the main level were so hard to push I could barely do it [let alone my child], the light up floor on the lower level didn't seem to do anything, 2/3 of the computers in the area for kids under 5 were not working, there may have been others too, and many of the exhibits we weren't really sure how to use properly - as they didn't have clear instructions). The light and color exhibit looks like it's getting pretty shabby on the outside too. I did however think some other things were fantastic - my child really enjoyed the road with the working lights and the Mackinac bridge, also the water play area in the young kids center was really great! I must also say the two young ladies who were putting on the DTE Sparks theater show did an absolutely excellent job - they were funny and smart and really eloquent - it was the highlight of our entire experience. We also paid an extra $6 a piece to do the planetarium show (which I was completely underwhelmed by). The lady who did the show seemed very sweet and did a good job, but the show itself was a little lame, and the projection seemed extremely blurry - not really worth $12 in my opinion. We went on a Wednesday and there were a lot of kids there for field trips, but they cleared out around 2, and I think we had the whole place to ourselves after that! If you're between going here and going to the hands on museum, I think the Hands of Museum was in far better condition - with many more things to do, but the Michigan Science center had fantastic staff (especially for their shows).
I have to also give a shout out to the lovely parking lot attendant Emma, who is the youngest and nicest 91 year old woman I have ever met in my life. She was wonderful to talk to - and even gave us her...
Read moreThis place is more awesome than you think it will be. TRULY DESERVES 5 STARS! Everything from the way it was built to the decorations fuels a child's interest in the science world. This place is incredibly clean, and very stimulating to the mind. We bought tickets for the planetarium show and we were NOT disappointed! My 5 year old daughter left the planetarium saying "that was incredible and amazing!" The staff was incredibly helpful, I forgot my phone in the planetarium and they were very quick to help me go back in and find it! the museums exhibit are perfect for any child but are mainly in my opinion geared for children over 5. We are members of the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum so we got our tickets half off! But this year when we renew our membership we will be going with the Michigan science center membership, because the place has so many more options for a child over 5 to do and learn. They have live science experiments at varying times throughout the day, and YOU DONT WANT TO MISS THOSE! Don't think they'll be lame, they are amazing and your kid will be so impressed to see what science can do! When you do go to the museum, make sure you have time to spare! You will need the time to really explore the whole place without missing something. We spent 3 hours there and we still weren't able to see all the exhibits! They have a cafe in the museum for quick bite if you want to make a day of your trip. The cafe's prices were VERY reasonable and they had foods that catered to all ages. There is absolutely no reason to NOT go here. Don't see the price and think "it's too expensive" like I did. Your child will remember this place for years to come and it may spark their interest in a possible career! That is too awesome to miss out on, you will not be disappointed and you will get your...
