I’ve lived within 2 blocks of Pekin Pavilion for the last 5 years. For the first four, I actually thought they were closed, but once I realized they were open for business I knew I had to go one day. Yesterday, on my way home from work I decided that that day had come. I’ve read some google reviews about the owner “yelling” on the phone and they did not let me down. Some have commented that the yelling is rude, but it really adds to the je ne se quois. I called in and after some confusion about sizes and spice levels, I completed my order of kung pow beef and an egg roll. I was a little nervous when they didn’t take down my name or confirm my phone number, but hoped for the best and headed down the street for pick up. Originally, my plan was to dine in but unfortunately I didn’t have time. When I arrived I saw who I assumed was the lady who took my order. She confirmed my assumption by somehow matching my face to my phone voice, knowing that I was the one who ordered the kung pow beef. I should note that I wasn't the only person there. I waited for a few minutes, admiring their wares(boxes of tea and chop sticks), until my kung pow beef was ready. You may have noticed that originally I mentioned an egg roll and now I’m ignoring that egg roll. This is because I never got the egg roll. No big deal. Anyways, as I left I admired the building for its reluctance to change or update a single thing. The sign in front of the restaurant claims they have been open for over 100 years, which is insane. Name another Chinese take out that’s been open for over 100 years.... I took the food home and opened the box (I this is when I realized there was no egg roll). They also included soy sauce, a plastic fork, rice and saltine crackers for some reason. I ordered medium spice and it was about as medium as medium gets. Lots of veggies, fresh rice, quality meat, and excellent sauce. It looked nothing like the kung pow beef I’ve eaten in the past, but not in a bad way. Now that I think about it I don’t even know if I’ve ever even had kung pow beef, I think i usually get kung pow chicken. Anyways it was good. I included photos. The place is a perfect cheap Chinese take out. You can’t get more Chinese take out than Pekin Pavilion. You may get some weird vibes from the exterior and the bulletproof shield between the workers and you, but give it a shot and you won’t regret it.

Great example of the term, "The best food at times comes from a whole in the wall." Pekin food tastes great, large portions and prices are appropriately aligned. However, their customer service lags, at times they appear unappreciative of their customers. Also, the atmosphere is in dire need of upgrades. Hence why I mentioned "whole in the wall." Nonetheless, the food is great!

I ordered sesame chicken and sweet sour chicken with chicken fried rice and egg roll $10.40!!! Prices are phenomenal and the food is very good!!! At first I couldnt understand the lady talking my order over the phone???? She was little cranky, otherwise good food overall... My mom, my son and I all ate from this plate!!! Portion sizes are amazing.👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Customer service is by far the barometer we should base any and all reviews concerning this resturant and their food! Although we had a recent experience of ordering our food ahead (and had a very difficult time understanding and being understood by the person taking the order, which could easily be resolved by hiring someone, from the neighborhood, which would help with customer relationship!) Upon arriving to pick up the order, had to WAIT for an additional 10 minutes to be recognized and receive our order! Extremely rude and very poor customer service to the community that supports you! And also, the food was descent but some of it was OLD and spoiled (we ordered the Shrimp Egg Foo Yong, shrimp was old and literally made us gag!!!) Gravy was extremely salty as well! Friends, don't be deceived! Support those who support us with good and qualified customer service! And when you're told "well just don't come back then" after we tried to address the issue, what does that tell you about who you're doing business with!!! Just because it's good to you, doesn't mean it's...
