Underwhelming at best. What a disappointment this place was. I've been meaning to try it ever since they opened over the summer and was never able to. My husband and I finally were able to go for a New Year's Eve dinner and we thought maybe they'd have some extra special stuff on the menu as a result. Nope.
We opted for a regular table and ordered from the menu as opposed to sitting at one of the Hibachi tables. Too much rowdiness going on in that section with all the sake flowing and culinary mayhem being exhibited by the chefs we wanted to enjoy our dinner in peace. So that was Flaw #1.
Hubby ordered steak teriyaki while I opted for shrimp teriyaki. Now, one would figure that a Japanese steak house, which features several hibachi tables would get this type of dish right. It is standard fare in these restaurants. Shrimp teriyaki is supposed to be MARINATED in the sauce and then grilled to perfection along with the veggies served alongside. It even states that on the menu. What I got instead was some lame BOILED shrimp that were not even cleaned properly (as in I could still see pieces of vein in them) with a pathetic excuse for teriyaki glaze poured all over them. Veggies were frozen and not fresh and served steamed. Blech. Sent it back. Flaw #2.
So...opted for 2 orders of avocado roll (which were great and super fresh) and vegetable dumplings, aka gyoza. I asked for pan fried and got them served steamed instead. So much for the waiter actually LISTENING to how I wanted it. I ate it but it was "meh" at best.
OK so for dessert we opted to share the"fried cheesecake". Looked really good on the plate and started out really good but as you got to the thicker back end of the cheesecake it was still frozen. Wow. Flaw #3. And $51 later I can safely say I will NEVER return nor will I EVER recommend this fakeass attempt of a Japanese steak house. The only reason they get one star is because of their...
Read moreWe are here from out of town and chose this restaurant bc we don't have a Japanese Steakhouse near where we live. My favorite is the Japanese Steakhouse in Columbus Ohio.
We ordered hibachi and had Win as our chef. He is a black hat so he is still a novice, though skilled with the tools of his trade.
The mushroom soup starter was okay. The broth tasted like it was bullion cubes rather than broth. They also use fried onion straws which I don't care for.
Salad with ginger dressing was salad with ginger dressing. Fried rice and vegetables were standard. Nothing special to commend, or to complain about.
I had the filet, my son had the filet and lobster, and my husband had the steak. All was well prepared and tasted yummy.
Here is why they are not a 5.... No hot towels upon being seated. As I understand it, this is traditional and I have always received hot towels at other Japanese Steakhouses. No chopsticks at place setting. Only forks were offered. Their choices for sauces, ginger dressing, and vegetable combination were not my favorite. I have enjoyed other Japanese Steakhouse's choices for these standard "condiments" more. No dessert. I have always had the option of vanilla ice cream or pineapple sherbet offered at other Japanese Steakhouses. The table entertainment was a bit too much. Vegetables into everyone's mouth, sake shooting, balloon hats for everyone, and rubber chicken jokes were a bit over the top. Maybe if the table was celebrating or we had asked for it, but we were a pretty subdued group. I prefer the more common displays of tool handling and food flipping into the chef's pocket and hat. Somehow that seems more...
Read moreThis is purely a review on some appetizers and sushi, as I've never had the hibachi or other entrees.
I've tasted nearly every sample of nigiri (minus any sea urchin, always seems to not be around to try it here), and barring my personal tastes, everything is pretty delicious. Absolute fan of the eel and tuna, as any sushi fan would probably be. Even on one instance mispronounced the Japanese name of an item and received what I learned later was a sort of tofu envelope around sushi rice, which was a pleasant surprise I enjoyed that I likely wouldn't have intentionally ordered, so a nice mistake I made there.
Appetizers that I've tried are all solid choices, especially the vegetable tempura. A recommendation on that though, absolutely wait to dig in on it. I legitimately burned my mouth on it, and couldn't taste food for nearly two weeks. Not the fault of this establishment, only my own impatience. It was certainly delicious at the time. I've tried various soups, and they've all been a subtle, nice side.
I've been here a few times, always when that sushi urge hits hard. It certainly fulfills it, even if it isn't the most outstanding, it's certainly impressive that in this local area, it's as...
