My family and I have stayed at the Canal Park Lodge a number of times and, generally, the stays have been nice when we've driven a car to the Lodge.
However, our recent stay for the weekend was disappointing. My husband and I were excited to bike the Munger trail from Carlton to Duluth. When we arrived in Duluth and Canal Park Lodge after a lovely ride, we secured our bikes on the Canal Park Lodge bike rack located in the front of the hotel with a cable. Sometime Friday evening a thief cut the cable and stole my husband's $700 bike. When we reported the theft to the staff the next morning they said they would check the security video and see if they could detect the thief to help us report the robbery to police. Shortly later when we didn't hear back from the staff and we enquired on the status of the video, they said they didn't have access to the security video and said the manager the next day (Sunday) could help us. The manager on Sunday said she couldn't view the video and only the General Manager could do so on Monday. Since the staff initially said they would view the video and then came back and said they couldn't view the video, we're not confident we were hearing the full story. Disappointingly, throughout this whole experience, no one at the hotel acknowledged that it was unfortunate the bike was stolen, no one offered options for addressing the problem since we were now stranded without a bike, and no one said they would work towards this not happening to someone else in the future. Bottom line...they could not have cared less and weekend management staff are not trained to address this kind of problem. If you are a biker...Canal Park Lodge is a risky place to go, security videos are not available when thieves steal a bike, and the staff could not care less about your experience. If you are a biker and decide to stay at Canal Park Lodge, have a plan B for when/if your bike gets stolen because the Canal Park Lodge staff will not help you address...
Read moreStayed here for my anniversary. It was lovely. The staff were courteous and knowledgeable about the area. The suite was super spacious and very clean. I loved the little balcony, we sat outside and read in the mornings after breakfast. The breakfast was really good, a bit different every morning than the last, and compared to other continental breakfasts this one blew the others out of the water. I liked that they carried the star tribune because I'm from Minneapolis and realized that I wasn't getting my local news on the nightly news, so it was nice to read about what was happening in the city while I was away. They had caribou coffee ready all day and night long as well as a plethora of teas in the lobby. They have an outdoor patio with a big fire pit and they had s'mores for the kids from the hockey tournament that ended up crashing overnight one night. Which speaking of that, was the only issue we had our whole stay. It was well past 10pm and kids were running up and down the halls, screaming, bouncing balls on the floors and walls, and their parents were all down in the community area letting their children run wild. When I went to the front desk to inquire about if duluth had any noise restriction times, the staff was great, they apologized for the rowdiness of the kids, said I wasnt the first guest to ask that question and said they were going to again firmly explain to the parents that they needed to round up their children (which I'm sure was frustrating to the staff to have to tell parents to actually do their job in parenting); but whatever they said by 10:45pm all was quiet again. I really recommend paying for the Lakeview, the sound of the waves are great, and absolutely NOTHING beats that sunrise. It was honestly one of the most beautiful sights. I really enjoyed my stay, and I will definitely come back and stay here again. I will also recommend this hotel to others who want a...
Read moreI love this place and I will make this my new hotel to stay at when I'm In duluth. I love the open lake view. I love the rooms and I love the staff. Love the pool area. I admit I accidentally pushed the red fire button attempting to turn on the jets for the Hot tub. Then I see someone else do the same thing. So they might want to put the switch in another location or closer to the hot tub. Besides that the pool are was great.
The negatives were a few things such as they do have police there quite often according to a staff member. They do have to call the police time to time. And if you want somewhere that has police traffic. This place might now be what your looking for. But it's not all the time. It's prob 2 times a week. Give or take. The other problem I had was the bed. It's not to my comfort. It was too hard. I been to super 8 and they have a much comfortable bed to my liking but this is duluth. Why would you stay at a super 8 if you can stay near the lake. So since it's a high end facility. I wish they won't let had better beds that are not so stiff and I'm 6 foot 2 and I had to tippy toe to sit on the bed. They are high too. But it's the stiffy hard bed that hurt me and I woke up with my back very sore. But I want this place to be the hotel of duluth. The best duluth has to offer so I hope they will fix those things.
I do want to mention. I hope one day soon the breakfast will be self served. So you can get your own food. To me it's better that way. Not a huge deal but it's ok.
Besides the few bad spot and a painful night. I do want to still make this hotel my go-to when I'm in duluth. It's really a dream come true in all aspects of this hotel. Thank you Canal Park Lodge. You really...
