East Hana — Restaurant in East Brunswick Township

I'm dismayed to leave this 1-star review for East Hana Sushi. My recent experience there was far from the standard one would expect from a reputable sushi restaurant. The servers did not show any effort to go above and beyond their basic duties. Merely bringing food to the table is a fundamental task, not something that warrants special appreciation in the form of a tip.

However, what truly marred the experience was the staff's approach to soliciting tips. They resorted to publicly embarrassing customers, loudly calling out for tips in front of friends and other patrons. This tactic is not only unprofessional but also disrespectful, making customers feel small and uncomfortable.

Good service is about adding value to the dining experience. It could be as simple as offering to wrap up leftovers for take-home, engaging in friendly conversation, providing insights about the menu, or even a brief tutorial on using chopsticks for those interested. These gestures make a dining experience memorable and tip-worthy.

Sadly, East Hana Sushi misses the mark on understanding the essence of good service. My advice to them: if you expect a tip, strive to earn it by enhancing the customer's experience. Such a quaint little restaurant nestled in the ShopRite shopping center in East Brunswick, NJ. I have not eaten inside the restaurant yet, as we've ordered takeout while my daughters are in gymnastics close by. The restaurant is clean, updated, and has a fun vibe. It is also BYOB, which is nice. The sushi is very fresh and they have an extensive menu ranging from soups, appetizers, salads, and vast arrays of sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls as well as teriyaki, donburi, noodles, tempura & katsu, bento boxes, lunch specials, udon, and hibachi entrees. So far, we have tried the rainbow rolls, salmon & avocado, sweet heart roll, sumo roll, and california roll. There is definitely a little something for everyone. Most dishes are served with sesame seeds, so I would definitely specify no sesame seeds if this is something you prefer not to have. They are currently closed on Monday's, but open for lunch and dinner the rest of the week. Sundays, they are open most of the day, while Tuesday through Saturday, they are briefly closed from 3pm reopening at 4pm. We definitely look forward to sampling the rest of the menu. This place used to be located in the Honk Kong supermarket, now it is opening up in the misstate mall, East Brunswick New Jersey.

I would go here everyday after work, it was great because they stayed open until 9:30 pm, sometimes 10:00 pm. Most places, including competition in the town are open until 9:00 pm only.

The Kani salad is great 🦀 and the Bento boxes 🍱 are 10/10z. I very much enjoyed how this used to be located in the Honk Kong Supermarket - I would wonder around he market looking for dessert after having a wholesome meal from East Hana.
