I have been a fairly frequent customer of Gugu for years since living in the area. I am here every couple of weeks to a month and also order out too. Normally the food is impeccable and service has been fine. Tonight I came in with two of my close friends for dinner, and this was far from our experience. Though my food was delivered and delicious, one of my friends recieved the complete wrong order. She was comped this and was given her order afterwards, so we let that go. Mistakes happen. The end to our meal is when my respect was lost.
My friends and I split our bills. We pay, our payment was taken back to the server station, and our receipts were given back. As we fill out our given tips, we reflected on the lackluster service provided by our server. I chose to give a, what I determine, a generous tip for our service as does my other friend. The three of us set the books back down. As having experience in the food service and customer service industries, the next move our server made was one of the first mistakes taught not to make. He stood at the foot of our table, took all three books, and continued to look our receipts up and down focusing on the tips. The three of us were already appalled, so we were watching him carefully. He gets to the third book which contains no tip (intentional or not intentional it does not matter nonetheless), and he flips the book around, says (not quoting as I don’t remember his exact words) something along the lines of “why did you not leave a tip?” Or “where is the tip?”. He further intimidates my friend by saying that he did not charge her for her soda so she should leave a tip, which has no correlation between leaving a tip or not, and she hands him much more than a 20% tip in cash out of confusion and fear. We leave in a hurry, and I decide to call to inform Gugu staff of this issue so it may get resolved privately.
When I called, I talked to an apologetic staff member who required speaking with her manager for assistance. I was glad to wait and ensure not only our concerns were heard, but how this would be resolved. I wanted to make sure I called to discuss this matter privately and not post a negative review right away. Though she was apologetic again, and said that these two points she was about to make were not excuses, my experience in the service and food industry served me well to know better. She stated that, again not quoted, that though this was disappointing and that she would bring this up to staff, that this behavior was either an extension of the server’s cultural background, and them being rightfully upset over not receiving a tip. With my plentiful experience in this industry and working with folks from all walks of life, including those with language barriers and cultural differences, I see these as excuses and I know that they certainly should not be. This level of customer service is not at the fault of the customer, certainly has nothing to do with leaving or not leaving a tip, and is fully the responsibility of this server and the team, including upper management, as a whole. I am appalled at all events that have gone down tonight. I love the food at Gugu and both my friends and family enjoy frequenting this establishment. I can assure you I will think twice before ordering again and I hope a lesson can be learned from this experience. I am saddened to write this but knew...

We (party of 3) arrived at around 12:30pm on a Sunday. The entrance consists of a few metal steps, which may cause slippery conditions on rainy days (like ours). We walked in and were shortly greeted by the hostess. The front dining room that we initially entered was empty, but the hostess led us around and to the back where we realized the space was much more expansive than we thought. The few scattered tables present were mostly filled. We were seated and brought menus and water (hot, upon request). Though the restaurant is marked as Japanese on Google Maps, the menu revealed a choice of options ranging from Thai to Chinese. They also had a few daily specials, one of which was a 6 count oyster for 13 dollars appetizer.
The service was a little slow, and the time it took from us placing our orders to getting served by the cat robot was around 15-20 minutes; we were trying to make a reservation at the nearby Longwood Gardens so this was an inconvenience. We decided on the 6ct Oysters, Drunkard’s Rice Noodles, Pad Thai w/ Chicken, and the Thai Massaman Curry w/ Chicken.
The oysters were served in a somewhat Japanese style with soy sauce and some sour tangy sauce, along with a cup of marinara in the middle. The oysters were fresh and tasted pretty good, though I’d never had it made in that way before and was a little confused at the flavors of soy sauce and raw oyster combined.
The entrees were pretty good. The curry was pretty spicy and came with a bowl of rice. The flavors were warm, rich, and deep, just what one expects. The pad thai was a little on the wet side (it’s supposed to be a dry cook) and lacked much color; it all came out to look monotone beige. The flavors were good and the chicken was a little hit or miss (i.e. some pieces were dry, others tender). The drunkard’s noodles (no they did not taste of alcohol) were probably my favorite. They were moist, flavorful, and delicious, and there was no skimping out on ingredients.
All in all I would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for some decent Asian food, but make sure you plan out your visit so you aren’t missing your garden...
