During the heavy rain yesterday, my daughter and I visited Smith Coffee. We were told by the young man at the outdoor counter we could not go inside, so we placed our order at the unsheltered counter, exposed to the rain. We took cover on the front porch on the other side of the entrance, waiting for four flat whites, two hot chocolates and one black tea. We noticed a woman with a child inside the coffee shop, and also a second woman working on a laptop inside the shop, so not sure about the covid rules here. We are relocating to the area and waiting for household goods to arrive. It took approximately ten minutes for the order, and the coffee was fine. However, the hot chocolates were no more than pale brown warm water which don't appear to have included chocolate. The large black tea was lukewarm milky water with a single teabag that had not steeped at all before being covered with cold milk. I had asked for cream and sugar for the hot tea, but if it's added prior to the teabag being steeped in very hot or boiling water, then it just becomes lukewarm, milky water. I understand the specialty at Smith is coffee, but perhaps the other products could be taken off the menu until the staff has mastered the art of making them. I remember the coffee shop from the past as Dunn Bros., but yesterday's experience at Smith was such a disappointment all round which I know could be improved upon with the right training and initiative. ...
Read moreThis shop badly disappointed me. Perhaps it was on off day for them?
Giving them 3 stars due to the nice location / historic house. There was a big line, everyone seemed to get served in a professional and timely fashion.
I noticed they didn't have a Cappuccino on the menu so I gambled on a Latte. Big or bigger is the name of the game, lots of milk, in my case oat milk. Little to no taste of any coffee, the drink did have a bitter / sour aftertaste which was quite disagreeable. I slugged it down since I'd paid for it, but couldn't finish it. It was yucky. Of further insult there did not appear to be any caffeine in the drink!
My order was takeout or I would have asked for a refund.
I ordered a their most expensive avocado egg type breakfast toast. It was decent, not great. Some small slices of avo topped with a well fried egg, I think there was some seasoning. Bread was good( a bit tough for chewing) yet I could only eat half of it, as was lacking in taste, appeal and artistry. Guess I should have ordered something else.
Really I expected more. They have glowing reviews? Perhaps with the big crowd it was the best they could do? I know...
Read moreMy 1st time here (4/11/21), they open at 8am, we made a reservation for 830am to play it safe, it seems to get busier after 9-10am. A lovely historical building turned cafe, it's a beautiful and comfortable space for coffee and/or breakfast, and socializing. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, and even with social distancing there are at least a dozen outdoor table/bench options spread throughout. There's a window for walkup orders, we chose to sit inside. The food was good, though I was disappointed that 2 coffees and 2 breakfast sandwiches were $35, especially since there is no table service---you must QR the menu, order, and pay online, which took 5x longer than if she just took our order...and we had to call her over for questions as it was. Technology may offer some efficiency for the business model, but it takes away from the customer experience. They use paper baskets and plasticware, hopefully only until after the pandemic. The staff was friendly, and they thanked us for coming.
I recommend you try this place, I'll...
