Golden China Restaurant — Restaurant in Edinburg

I was surprised I could not get a change of drink in the entire time I was there. I was drinking ice water for the last 20 minutes because my female server never came to switch me out with a new one, and when I’d hope she’d notice, I’d turn around to find her, and she was in a small area on the left back hiding. My date did leave a tip for her, so that was not warranted for how she treated me. He did get a switch out of his drink because the only time she did come to switch out drinks, he needed one, and I guess she didn’t switch mine at this time. Had she kept coming with this goal in mind, she would have noticed me needing one then. This was the worse part of our visit, considering I ate soy sauce and spicy food and needed a drink because my ice melted and had nothing left. I left with my throat very dry. The food choice is limited. They did not have my favorite, which is cold shrimp. Cold shrimp is my reason to visit buffet style restaurants, and the gulf is so near this restaurant that shrimp access is available! I also visit Chinese buffet style restaurants for the oven garlic shrimp, or maybe they’re friend in oil, but they’re different than the fried breaded option they did have, and all Chinese buffet style restaurants have them. They also didn’t have crab legs, which I always get in these style of buffet restaurants. So three of my choice options were not available. This was not a good option for what I like, so my review is just about these disappointments not necessarily the taste of the food that was available to me. The options are very limited, but the available food did not disappoint. The food available tasted good, but then again, all Chinese buffet restaurants, generally, have good tasting food. If you don’t mind the lack of many options, this Chinese restaurant will work for you. It just has two small aisles and the salad bar. I, literally, took a picture of everything available. I had a good time because of my company, and the atmosphere is quiet. It’s a small restaurant that just probably needs a little more food, and they truly have the space available to make up for the things they don’t have on the left side of the restaurant. UPDATE on 1-2-2025. This little family-run place has upped its game since our last visit in 2023. We got there right when they opened, and the food was fresh and very good. General Tsos was crunchy and delicious. Broccoli beef was good. Chicken with Chinese veggies was excellent. Fried rice and noodles were both very well prepared. Outstanding fruit - watermelon, bananas, grapefruit. Wow, this place is back in our good graces after a couple of disappointing visits.

2023 Review (from 7-6-2023) The emphasis here is quantity, not quality. Lots to eat, but nothing really memorable and not much flavor. Three of us ate: food was bland and not at proper temperature (lukewarm), General Tsos was mostly breading (very tough / hard) with very little chicken. Sweet & sour sauce had an off taste. Food don't look fresh. I was gonna go to a Mexican restaurant instead but I really like this Chinese buffets. But Food Looks like it has been sitting for hours. Green beans look black for some reason. No fresh options. Couldn't get a salad because Salad is old and nasty looking. White lettuce leafs and nasty looking tomatoes. Not even the pizza look edible. It had a pool of oil sitting on top. Never been to a Chinese restaurant like this one.

After tasting the food, I can tell you that Iam Never coming here again. Food tastes really bad. I threw it away to avoid food poisoning as the chicken tastes sours like if it was rotting.
