Sgt. Pepper's Cafe — Restaurant in Edwardsville

The short version: Food is decent enough, service is okay, prices are absolutely outrageous.

The long: we used to live in Edwardsville years ago. Home for the holiday season and we decided to stop in for breakfast. I ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy, hash browns, a side of bacon, and a small juice. My husband just got hot tea, and our bill was $25. When we looked, they charged $3.50 for the tea, which was literally a Lipton tea bag and a mug of hot water on the side. Not loose leaf high quality tea in a strainer, just your run of the mill Lipton bag for $3.50. The side of hash browns was $5, which were greasy and unappetizing. We live in Washington DC now so we usually don’t scoff at prices, but we were shocked that a small restaurant in southern Illinois is charging prices like they are in the heart of Manhattan. It would be different if it was a higher quality product (hence the tea comment) but $3.50 for a tea bag is ridiculous.

The service was mostly teenage girls, they were okay but not a lot of personality and seemingly confused. For example we placed our orders and our friend said “oh I’ll keep my menu, I’m going to order to go for my wife in a little bit” and the girl looked confused, picked up the menu he had and walked away. It was actually a little comical, but it felt like they didn’t have much interpersonal communication training.

I have been here twice and both times were extremely disappointing. This restaurant had west-coast beach-front brunchery PRICES for mediocre food. Not worth the cost. Let me highlight my two experiences:

The first time I went here I ordered a horseshoe (their special) and asked if I could add vegetables to it. I figured this wouldn't be a problem because they already had a vegetable option. They said sure. After waiting over an hour for my food, I finally got it, and got roughly a half-table spoon of each vegetable. When I got my bill they charged me a DOLLAR PER VEGETABLE (of which I got hardly any) and my meal sky-rocketed in price (from 16 dollars to 24 dollars). I asked the waitress if that was normal/ why this wasn't communicated to me in advance and she was EXTREMELY rude and insisted that was how it was done. I paid and left angry about being skimped and overcharged.

I decided to try this place again, learning my lesson from before, and thought maybe it was a one-off bad day. No. I was excited to see meatless options and got the impossible nuggets platter. It was 17 dollars... for 6 NUGGETS!! And it didn't even taste good!

Came here for lunch on a Saturday and wish I could get my money back!!! Ordered a grilled cheese on rye for $9.99, add ham for a $4.99 upcharge. My sandwich came out with literally one slice of American cheese, barely melted, and one slice of the thinnest lunch meat style ham a human could possibly cut - ONE thin slice of lunch meat for $4.99 on top of the already expensive $10 grilled cheese?! What a ripoff and an absolute joke! Also did not enjoy the (overly fried) french fries, but received a huge serving of them, while another member of my party who ordered a burger and fries received a small handful of about 7 french fries on her plate. Atmosphere was also sorta gross and dirty / run down feeling. Also, it was cold in the restaurant, even though our table wasn’t close to the door.
