We love boondoggles. Used to come here all the time when we had our boat. And later our kayaks. Really had enjoyed the service and the food on the dog friendly patio. We were able to bring our pup. Today while googling “Best Ruben’s near us” Boondoggles came up. Oh great, we love that place. We went there solely for a Rueben because we have tried to find something comparable to Ziggy‘s deli on Post Oak blvd downtown Houston. It came highly recommended from the bartender when we mentioned we heard the Rubens were some of the best around. We each ordered one. We found them to be just mediocre. Big Thick Texas rye toasted. Which was problem, number one. Authentic Ruben’s or grilled on a grill. Secondly there could not have been more than 2 tablespoons of sauerkraut smashed into the bread. The corned beef was sliced thick and relatively tender, but not enough to save the rating of this sandwich. Lots of good food here and we have had really excellent service on the outside patio. Today was mostly mediocre. I wish you could wear a sign around your neck that says “ I bartended for 25 years.” As to not be judged by our silver hair. “Assuming we are terrible tippers. Many young servers have missed out on really fabulous tips due to lack of attentiveness and this assumption. When I trained servers and bartenders, I always caution them against being biased by the way, a person looks. You don’t know who’s been a server/bartender before. I always told them to To serve their customer like they knew they were big tippers. That way when the check came and whether or not it was a big or small tip, you know for sure it...
Read moreAMAZINGLY DELICIOUS PIZZA CHIPS!! ~ Who'd have guessed a Chicago gal would fall for pizza in Tejas!? ;-) Not only are they good, it's a great option for those of us who can't eat a lot of tomato sauce because there was either none, or very little, on these! I was born in Chicago, but have a sibling & many cousins who've lived in TX for nearly 40 yrs. Now with nephew, great-nephews & whatnot, I have a ton of family spread out in the state. The last time my hsbd & I visited the Houston Area, we stayed in Seabrook. We went to Boondoggles one night for a drink & something to eat. He couldn't believe when I ordered "Pizza Chips" (in TX over the Midwest of all things!). Yet they were SO good that the next night, I had a taste for them as a late snack. My husband ordered pizza chips & brought them back to the hotel for me. I may have even had them a 3rd time that week, lol. I was a bit bummed on the way to San Antonio that we didn't get any pizza chips to bring with and eat cold on the drive. TBH, "pizza chips" are a lot like a thin crust pizza with a hint of garlic and little to no tomato sauce. Now back home in the Midwest we've been trying to find recipes similar to Boondoggles' pizza chips. As a restaurant, it's a decent place. But, it's definitely a crowded bar hang-out as well. Don't expect "quiet" on a busy night - nor an exorbitant amount of dining space. It can be a bit tight for table & chair space. For us, the food was well...
Read moreMy husband and I went here for dinner and they honestly ruined my whole night, I was so disappointed. First of all, the people there were nasty, there was an Astros game on and men were yelling and cursing even though there were kids there and people were trying to eat. And no one said a word to shut them up. We had a young male server, maybe early twenties and when he brought us our beer, he was holding the glasses with his filthy fingers at the tips of the glasses where we would drink from. So disgusting. I had to memorize where he held on so I could sip from the side where he didn't hold it. Who does that? Ugh. Anyway on to my disgusting dinner. Their whole menu is chicken and pizza and burgers. What is up with the chicken? If I wanted chicken, I'd cook it at home. My chicken and mashed potatoes were both absolutely disgusting that I couldn't even finish. My husband tried it and agreed, especially the mashed potatoes. His pizza was fine luckily. Never eating here again. I guess you get what you pay for, with their cheap prices. It's just so sad since this place is supposed to be an iconic place where astronauts frequent but I don't understand why in the world they would ever come to this place and...
