I am very sorry to say, but true Puerto Rican Cuisine has changed for the worst!!!
My wife and I went to this place and order the Sancocho that came with Arroz con Gandules and I ordered the Pernil with Arroz Blanco with Habichuelas. On the side we ordered 2 orders of Alcapurrias with Carne (Because on the Website, even though it shows 2 per order on the photo, you only get 1), to me that is false advertisement, but that’s Ok, let’s continue.
Here are the problems that we encountered and that honestly, I do not think we are ever going back, and hopefully help someone else make a wise decision!
-The Sancocho tasted just like a Caldo de Res, nothing more and nothing less.
-The Arroz with Gandules and the Arroz Blanco was hard, like it came from a batch made earlier, that came out of the refrigerator and then put into the microwave before serving, and to top it off, it was not warmed enough, or maybe it was made fresh but simply uncooked.
The Habichuelas had a very good casero (Homemade) taste, but they were cold, again, probably came out of the refrigerator and then not nuked enough.
And finally the Pernil, Ohhhhhhh my GOD, it was not even seasoned like a True Puerto Rican Pernil……
There are 5 simple ingredients that go into the pernil. Salt, Pepper, Oregano, Olive Oil and Lots of fresh garlic, and that goes for the lechon as well…….THAT’S IT!
Some people add Sofrito, Recaito, Adobo, Sazon and some little and I repeat, some little Citrus. But noooooooooooooo, the cook or the chef had to make his or her own twist or version and added so much &^%&$ into it that it was inedible and unenjoyable.
P.S. Beer is too expensive and the Medalla Beer is only 10 ounces (Lite by the way), and not 12 ounces, like the rest like the Coronas!
Again, I can only speak from our experience yesterday; maybe hopefully somebody else has a better one than...
Read moreDuring a recent visit to 787 Restaurant and Bar, I had the opportunity to experience a taste of Puerto Rico in the heart of El Paso. The restaurant’s name pays homage to the island’s area code, and from the moment I stepped inside, the ambiance reflected a thoughtful effort to capture the spirit and warmth of Puerto Rican culture.
For my meal, I ordered mofongo con camarones, accompanied by a side of arroz y habichuelas. The mofongo—a traditional dish made of mashed green plantains—was well-executed, with a firm yet tender texture and a subtle garlic flavor that paired nicely with the generous serving of sautéed shrimp. The camarones were fresh, perfectly cooked, and complemented by a flavorful sofrito-based sauce that elevated the dish without overpowering the mofongo.
The arroz y habichuelas (rice and beans), a staple in Puerto Rican cuisine, were a satisfying addition. The rice was well-cooked and fluffy, while the beans were seasoned just right, with hints of adobo and sazón coming through in each bite. The balance between the two elements showed attention to traditional preparation methods and an understanding of authentic flavor profiles.
Service was courteous and attentive throughout my visit, and the dining atmosphere was clean and inviting, with tasteful decor that celebrates Puerto Rican heritage.
Overall, 787 Restaurant and Bar delivers a commendable culinary experience for anyone seeking Puerto Rican cuisine in El Paso. The quality of the food, combined with thoughtful presentation and a warm dining environment, makes it a standout destination for both newcomers to the cuisine and those longing for a...
Read moreOrdered 70 dollars worth of food to pick up and they got it all wrong. Ordered three plates of breaded chicken but got dry chicken that was baked and all clumped up together. Meat was dry and you could literally pick it up with the fork. And ordered sweet plantains but gave us regular fried plantains instead.
Update: As customers that’s orders the same plates via pickup/delivery from this place at least a few times a month. This recent experience will be our last. The man that is on the phone is very unprofessional. Talks nicely but gaslights you. Insisted that he didn’t make no mistakes taking the order over the phone. We’ve never had an issue until this order, and mistakes happens sometimes but instead of just resolving the issue he gave a “I took your order down right, there’s nothing I can do” and gave a it is what it is type attitude and no resolution to it. We’ve always stuck to our fav plates the breaded chicken or the Cuban sandwich but this man was so firm that it was garlic chicken that was ordered, which we didn’t even know they had on their menu. Regardless for $70, the chicken was dry and bland as you could see from the picture. A simple “hey let’s make it right” could’ve changed the direction of the conversation on the phone but all we got was “there’s...
