China Poblana - Cocina Mexicana — Restaurant in El Paso

I don't review any place that's terrible unless it crosses a certain threshold: lack of care for the customer. I don't know what caused this restaurant to go from once having glowing reviews to falling to the near flatline level we experienced. However, when we went there it failed on so many levels -- multitudes, as they say.

Was it the barely warm, tepid, watered-down menudo that literally had three pieces of meat? Was it the sound of the microwave running for the duration of our meal? Was it the extremely funky smell of the world's worst "huevos rancheros" and their accompanying, celery-containing, "red"-tinctured chile sauce -- that had me fearing food poisoning?

Was it the barely-cooked roasted potatoes that adorned the saddest-looking, microwaved, chile relleno? Was it the "fresh" juice that tasted like it contained blended CANNED fruit? Was it the dirty utensils left on the table for us to use?

Everything added up to being our our saddest El Paso dining experience ever. We literally had no words to describe our meals as we ate. When your best item is the canned soda (because we know this wasn't tainted by the kitchen)...things are wrong on multiple levels.

There are restaurants that are struggling to survive. There are restaurants that are running on past glory. Then there are restaurants like Paquime that are beyond their expiration date, threatening to take down there customers with them because they simply don't care enough to shut down. It seems like when I walked in on Father's day they were short staff or something. Looked like they only had one waiter but I was the only customer in there this morning. I ordered the menudo, Obviously I'm not Mexican so I'm not an expert but it definitely looked like pesole. There was no pork just small bits of beef. I would have eaten it but the waiter served me the napkins and spoon in a filthy freakn cup. It not only had stains but left over food inside. I explained to him and showed him the cup. If there was a language barrier I understand but he grabbed the spoon and said, "it looks okay." I pointed at the cup. He still played dumb. I recently discovered a charming breakfast spot near downtown that exceeded my expectations. Their antioxidant energizing fresh juice was not only refreshing but also generously served, arriving in a pitcher that provided two and a half pint-sized servings. The Chihuahuas sampler, featuring Machacado and three cheese enchiladas with beans, was an explosion of flavor and left me thoroughly satisfied. With an extensive breakfast menu available all day, the options are plentiful. The atmosphere is both quaint and spacious, and the friendly service, particularly from the older man working there, added to the enjoyable experience.
