I've had two dinner experiences at Tony's Japanese Restaurant, both large group celebrations. The first was better than this recent experience.
First, the restaurant is definitely in need of a makeover. Upon entering there is an odor of dirty carpeting and probably embedded residue in the interior walls and fixtures from years of cooking. It needs serious refreshing and upgrading.
Although the service was great from the hostess, servers, and chef, my food option fell short. I ordered the Shrimp entree that was prepared Hibachi style.
The onion soup was tasty. A few more mushroom and fried onion slices would have been nice. The salad was fresh, but it was way over dressed for the portion size.
The hibachi prepared meal although plentiful was disappointing. The fried rice was flavored well, but only had egg. Although there was a side of vegetables, perhaps this compensated for no veggies in the rice. The rice is served well in advance of the other sides in the entree so you're eating just rice with egg for a while. When the vegetable was served, they were delicious and prepared well. Now the shrimp! The portion size was plentiful!!! I was AMAZED! BUT... the shrimp tasted off, VERY earthy. Not sweet, not shrimpy! I ate only a few because there was an aftertaste in my mouth. Another diner in my group who had the same entree felt the same.
I don't know what was going on with the shrimp, but the Head or Executive chef and owners should look into it to ensure the quality of the shrimp is beyond expectation. I'm not saying this protein wasn't; however, shrimp that is not properly deveined can have an earthy taste. As a foodie, currently, I wouldn't recommend the shrimp entree or any dish that is prepared with the same brand of shrimp.
I love Asian cuisine and I'm particular where I dine. I will most likely not...

Read moreNot a bad place to stop for an hour and get some Habachi style food, if you have the money for it. Having been to many Habachi grills over my life I've got to say this place was not the best ive been to by a longshot. Everything is overpriced, with maybe an exception for their combo dinners. The drinks I got were either watered down, or were mixed wrong at the bar. The worst that I experienced was their noodle policy. You cannot replace the rice with noodles according to our server and it costs an extra 4 dollars for some simple soba noodles. Not to mention, they give you the smallest amount of noodles I have ever seen from any western Asian style restaurant To Date. I maybe got half a pound of noodles for 4 dollars. At least the chefs seemed good at their job. Ours quickly came to understand that we were going to entertain ourselves and focused on cooking our food right. Tony's gets points for that, since alot of H.Grills I go to overcook your food, it was a nice change of pallet to have well made Habachi food. All in all: Good Food, Good Chefs, everything else, including pricing policy and its alcohol menu is a...
