I've been there several times. As far as the wait time it depends on how crowded it is. Just don't go expecting Scends because it's not Scends it's Rob Ben's new restaurant new owner. I do believe people have been expecting that same flavor even though it's a new and different restaurant with a new owner. Rob Ben's have their own flavor and style....
Very similar menu with some additional items added to the menu including breakfast and soul food specials of the day like oxtails and turkey legs. They open at 7 or 7:30 a.m. in the mornings. The kitchen closes I believe at 12 and then reopens I believe at 3pm.. Be sure to verify the times. I believe the bar remains open during those times as well... I'm not sure but be sure to verify.
The seasoning of the chicken is not the same seasoning as Scends and can't be because it's not their recipe and if they use the recipe they'll be sued. In the first day or two the chicken needed more seasoning but other than after adding a little salt and hot sauce it was good. The issue with the seasoning of the chicken has been corrected so I believe all has been good since then.
I've had the oxtails several times.... the oxtails were really really good including the green beans and the yams. Whenever I ordered the oxtails it was at the end of the night so like the plate that I posted on my Facebook page the meat had falling off the bone.... but I had a lot of meat.... and I could care less whether not the meat is on the bones or not as long as I had enough on my plate... that's just meant I didn't have to deal with the bones just moved them to the side. The oxtails and the turkey necks are specials you won't see on the menu so when you go there you have to look at the board that's on the wall to see what the specials are for the day. The plates are like 17.99 it comes with the gravy and rice you just have to order two additional sides. The corn bread slices are not as large but still good... even though I prefer larger slices... All-in-all I like the spot.... It's close to home and good folks... No drama.... A great place to watch sports and hang with friends and family...plus they have oxtails.... Lol... so I'll continue to patronize them.
Whether or not you like the spot will have to be your decision not anybody else's you got to check them out for yourself everybody opinion, expectations and intolerances...
Read moreWalking in, you may wonder if you'd walked into a bar, but stick around. We showed up super late, but they still sat us. Food takes about 30ish or so minutes, and like I said, we were late. As in last table served late.
I got the 6 pc fish with greens and Mac. Clean fish. Greens with no pork. The Mac was spot on for what I expected.
My wife had the gumbo, which had everything in it that it should. She got her rice on the side, her choice, by the way.
My son got the 3 pc chicken wing and Mac. He had me strip the wings and ate it all and all of the Mac. This is rare for him being as picky as he is.
We also got a side of yams and grits. I like my grits cooked to a certain consistency, and they nailed it, unlike the soup they serve at Burdells.
Also threw 1 Heineken on to the bill.
Before leaving, we ordered a peach cobbler and banana pudding to go. Get them both. The cobbler hit every childhood memory on the way down. The pudding My son wanted to have to himself.
We also grabbed the strawberry crunch for my wife's mother's birthday. She loved it. Thank you to the waitress who set us up with this. You were amazing and thank you for having us in that late.
Total bill was between 120-130
We will be going back for breakfast to try the chicken and waffles the waitress told me about. Given how picky and I am how good their food was I'm actually looking forward to it after how much of a letdown so many other...
Read moreFirst time here at Rob Ben's.My big Sis is always here when she's in town and raves about the food, but always forgets to bring me. We came after Oakland Fan Fest on a Saturday. The restaurant just opened for the day and I loved the atmosphere. I had a feeling we were going to enjoy our selves. We got the Mama Lynch Combo - 3 Fried Fish, 3 Chicken Wings, 2 Porkchops - 2 sides Mac n Cheese and Greens, extra sides of fries and Yams, and added 2 Green Onion Cornbread Muffins! All of this fed 3 people. I lost all sense of decorum while I was eating, elbows were on the table, hat on my head, finger licking and it was smackin! The food was so good I had to turn my hat to the back! I didn't say a word for 20 minutes - just chewing and dancing in my seat (the music was an Old Skool R&B Mix dream). Once I slowed down and stopped being a glutton, I had a gangsta lean in my booth seat - to the left to the left. Our server was amazing! The family is wonderful, kind, welcoming and friendly. They were putting their feet in everything from the food to the desserts and the drinks! Nothing but love in everything they do. I waddled out the door! 10 out of 10 -...
