JoJo's Creamery — Restaurant in Encinitas

Since going dairy free and gluten free my best friend and I have been on an eternal quest to find ice cream we can eat that actually tastes good. Finally this is it! They have regular ice cream too, but their vegan flavors are mind blowing!!! On top of all that, I never expected to find an ice cream place that served gluten free cones—couldn’t believe it! We tried the vegan peanut butter chip and mint chip—both really really good, with gf cones that tasted like the real thing (no cardboard). And (yes it gets better) each ice cream purchase comes with a complimentary chocolate chip cookie (gf or not, your choice). Decently priced and delicious, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the gf cones were only 5 cents more, and the gf cookies were no charge. So so awesome and so excited to finally get to enjoy this delicious frozen treat again. If I had one piece of constructive criticism to add, it would be that the vegan mint chip flavor could stand being just a bit more minty, but that’s just nitpicking at this point. Service was wonderful too, and their sample spoons are real spoons—great way to stay environmentally friendly and make me feel special while they’re doing it....

While visiting from Arizona, we decided to give Jojo’s a try because of the good reviews of their gluten free and dairy free options. Two of us had the dairy free strawberry and the dairy free strawberry shortcake ice cream and they were both chalky and didn’t have much flavor. We’ve had better dairy free ice cream in pints we get from the grocery store. The gluten free cookies weren’t very good either.

Plus, I feel it important to note for those of us who have a dairy intolerance that even though they keep the dairy free ice cream separate from the dairy based ice cream, there must be some cross contamination because I got sick very shortly after starting to eat mine. I am highly sensitive to dairy and it doesn’t take much for me to have a reaction.

The third person in our party got the regular dairy based ice cream in multiple flavors and he said his was chalky too and none of it was very good. He said his free cookie was better than the ice cream.

How do you elevate your experience when you are surrounded by the beautiful coastal town of Encinitas with multiple dining options and incredible sunsets? You create ice cream flavors that are rich, creamy, and rival the willowy wisps of clouds surrounding you, rolled in a freshly baked waffle cone which will transport you to nirvana. The shop is cozily nestled between other establishments, but the long line out the door certified its credentials long before we entered. Once inside, we were greeted with delicious flavors like Nibby Chocolate, Lemon Berry Shortbread, Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Chip, and a few other amazing flavors. However, the flavors aren’t the only thing to entice you, the place offers vegan and gluten free options as well. While browsing through these selections the warm smell of the freshly baked and rolled waffles, and chocolate chip cookies kept tantalizing us.
