TL;DR The Taj Mahal is incredible in every way. I've never had a bad experience here, and it is the MOST authentic Indian food Evansville has to offer. Staff is beyond friendly, atmosphere incredible, and the food is 10/10! You will not be disappointed.
My wife and I have been dining at the Taj Mahal regularly since moving here in 2019. We were pleasantly surprised, when on 8/23/25 we walked in and were met with a newly painted dining room with new décor.
Don't get me wrong the old restaurant style was very inviting, and immersive however, the new renovations created an entirely new and exotic atmosphere. The tall host was very inviting, and quickly sat us at our table. Despite the dining room being mostly full, almost as soon as we were sat the manager promptly took our orders, and served our drinks.
For our meal I had the Lamb Rogan Josh, and my wife had the Butter Chicken with a side of Aloo Naan. The lamb was incredibly tender, and the curry was rich with flavor. I went with a medium spice level, and found that it was the perfect balance of heat while not overpowering the bold flavors of the curry. When paired with the Aloo Naan I found myself giddy.
After gorging ourselves on our main dishes I had my absolute favorite desert in the Gulab Jamun. I've been intoxicated with this dish since having it overseas a number of years ago, and the Taj Mahal never disappoints! The fried dough balls were perfectly moist with the syrup while still maintaining a lightly fried exterior crust.
Upon payment we struck up a conversation with the manager who was an absolute joy to talk to. You can tell his, as well as all of the other staff's, passion is poured into this exceedingly special gem that is the Taj Mahal.
I can not recommend this place enough. You will not be...

My family joined me for their first experience, and we all loved the food and the service! We started with two pakora appetizers—chicken and paneer—both crispy, flavorful, and paired with delicious sauces. It's an easy choice for first time visitors since the pakora dishes are bite sized and can be shared across the table with loved ones.
Our server offered to assist our first time guests with ordering, but since I had visited so many times, we were ready and ordered chicken korma, lamb and mushrooms, and chicken biryani Hyderabadi (my #1 pick). We enjoyed the naan with onions as well as paneer, but I've had almost all varieties, including the plain naan. They are all served warm and taste fresh.
Our server took care to ensure my family's meal was prompt and well-timed, with our three entrees arriving together and served with spoons for easy sharing.
My family enjoyed the rich and savory lamb with mushrooms, the aromatic and perfectly spiced Chicken Biryani Hyderabadi, and the creamy, comforting chicken korma. Every dish was absolutely delicious (and yes, I did try each entrée).
I plan to return to try the midday buffet. No matter what time you visit, the food and service here are excellent.
Highly recommend Taj Mahal in Evansville (East Side) for anyone craving authentic and flavorful Indian cuisine.
PS They also offer to-go orders.

Read moreEverything my group ordered had amazing flavor! I'd ordered the Aloo Tiki as an appetizer and it was presented with 3 sauce options that were all different flavor profiles and wonderful additions to the appetizer. One sauce was a sweet apple, one was a refreshing mint, and the third reminded me of a kimchi almost. All paired deliciously well with the Aloo Tiki! For my main dish I'd ordered the Paneer Korma which had a fantastic buttery flavor. Having never had paneer before, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this dish. I'd also gotten the regular Naan bread and I could have just filled up on that and been happy!
The food was only exceeded by the service we received from our hostess, Sukh (apologies to her if I've misspelled her name.) She was attentive, kind, and handled my group of giggly girls with absolute grace. She saw us trying to take a picture of our group and offered to step in and take the picture for us. We had mentioned it being one girls birthday in our group and at the end of our meal she came out with a joyous grin as she brought a little ice cream dish with a birthday candle in it and sang happy birthday with us to our birthday girl. The ice cream was even separated into 4 portions for us to share as we'd been seen sharing our dishes with each other. She was such a sweetheart and made our first experience at this establishment an absolute delight!
