Anyone who’s familiar with my reviews knows one thing: I’m hyper-critical—especially when it comes to sushi. I’ve dined at some of the top spots in Manhattan, and I rarely hand out five-star ratings. That said, Sushi Roppingi in Fairfield, CT, has more than earned it. This place is, without question, the best sushi experience you’ll find in Fairfield—and easily on par with some of the most respected sushi restaurants in NYC.
We ordered the sushi boat, spicy tuna rolls, and a number of other specialty rolls, and every single bite was flawless. The fish was exceptionally fresh, expertly cut, and beautifully presented. The spicy tuna roll in particular had the perfect balance of heat, texture, and flavor—clearly crafted by someone who understands sushi at a high level.
Surprisingly, one of the standouts of the night was the miso soup. It wasn’t the typical afterthought you get at most places. This had depth—rich, savory, and complex in flavor. You could tell real care went into it. We also appreciated the Sapporo on tap—ice cold and perfectly poured, it complemented the meal without overpowering the delicate flavors of the sushi.
The ambiance at Sushi Roppingi also deserves a shoutout. The music playing throughout the restaurant transported me back to early- to mid-2000s Miami—classic techno tracks that set a laid-back, upscale vibe without being too loud or intrusive. It’s rare that a sushi restaurant gets the soundtrack right, but they nailed it.
Service was attentive but never overbearing—friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. They let the food and atmosphere speak for themselves, and that’s the mark of a confident, well-run restaurant.
In short, Sushi Roppingi is the real deal. It’s clear they take pride in every aspect of the experience—from the food to the drinks to the ambiance. Whether you’re a Fairfield local or just passing through, make this your go-to sushi spot. This is not just great sushi “for Connecticut”—this is Manhattan-level sushi right in...
Read moreWe dined here on 11/15/2025, and while the food was generally good, I can't say the same for the service. We were seated as a table of four and there were only two napkins on the table. During the course of our meal we asked for two more napkins three times until the staff finally obliged. Unfortunately, the napkins arrived at the tail end of our dining experience.
The service was also very uneven. Two entrées were served very quickly; the third entrée arrived about 5-10 minutes later; and the fourth (my) entrée arrived ~10 minutes after that one. The way it played out is that the other three guests had to watch me eat with empty plates for a good 15+ minutes (and I watched them eat with no food in front of me for the first 15 minutes).
Like I said up front, the food was generally good (we mostly ordered sushi), but the tempura ice-cream shell was very soggy and lukewarm, and the ice cream was melted quite a bit. This dish had clearly been sitting out for a good while before being brought out to our table, further illustrating the food timing issue.
The restaurant did not appear crowded or close to full that evening as there were empty tables and we didn't see a wait, so I don't see any justification for the poor food timing. I don't think we will be...
Read moreWent on their first soft opening day, and gotta say the place was great. That staff were very friendly and had some nice conversations with both the owners and staff.
For drinks we tried a couple of cocktails both on and off menu, and the bartender did great on all of them. Food was amazing, we tried a couple of small bites to get a sense of things and loved them all. Think our favorite had to be the paradise roll, which is something I will probably order every time I come.
The interior seating and bar area looked nice. The illustrative grill wall art was interesting to look at.
Definitely coming back to this place to try some more thing. Would...
