We visited Larry's Lunchbox while on vacation and thought we had found a nice little hole-in-the-wall place to dine. The lady behind the register was absolutely awful to customers and rushing around as though she'd never worked in a restaurant a day in her life. She wouldn't accept payment from what appeared to be regular customers as she fussed at them because she was "too busy" and told them to "pay next time."
I placed my order from the hanging menu board and she informed me that it wasn't current and threw a paper menu in front of me and asked me to order from it. Low and behold the #1 that I was attempting to order ended up being the exact same thing in the menu.
We were shocked to see that our food (two sandwiches, a side of soup, and two drinks) rang up to $35, but paid and didn't ask questions to avoid a verbal berating. She also complained about a customer who wanted her sandwich hot instead of cold, then proceeded to take the half-eaten food back into the kitchen. She made other customers get their own drinks from behind the service counter.
This woman was absolutely awful to her coworkers, who appeared to have grown used to it as they just ducked their heads and worked silently. After accepting our payment, she threw my credit card and receipt down on the counter acting as though she couldn't spare one second to hand it back to me.
The food was delicious, but the customer service was abysmal and we were shocked to see such poor service from a mom-and-pop-type establishment. A little training would go a long way. Even though the food was good, we will not return due to the...
Read moreFirstly! before I say more. the food was good but the place was understaffed and the lady working the counter was overwhelmed with telephone and in-person customer orders and extremely annoyed that the call-in orders had not picked up their food yet and that she was running out of counter space. While ordering the food I felt like I should not give her Specific Instructions as to how I wanted my food prepared so not to further annoy her (HOT corned beef sandwich on rye with mustard, onion and swiss cheese, it came just warm) still tasted good but not what I wanted and I felt it would be a problem to tell her what I wanted or return it to her to be done properly. I had a beer with an ice cold Frosty mug that you could not see through I poured the beer into the glass and drink the beer, when I got to the end of the beer I noticed slivers of Green Glass in the bottom of the mug and when I presented her with what I had found and consumed her response was "Oh looks like a broken Heineken bottle" and she never offered an apology. So needless to say I will never eat there again and if you do,...
Read moreLarry's Lunchbox is an institution - I remember coming here 20 years ago - and it was over 10 years old then!
This is a no-nonsense deli that stacks up with the best of them. All the usual suspects are on the menu and the plates are super-sized from the start.
There was no Matzoh soup today (alas), but Paul's Popular Pursuit more than satisfied. For chopped liver enthusiasts, this one is a must (Pastrami, chopped liver, swiss, slaw & russian on rye).
Kids had bowl of chili and a BLT.
For those of you living in Naples and yet unfamiliar with Larry's Lunchbox, you should really pay this iconic lunchbox a visit - Especially if you're already familiar with what a real delicatessen is all about.
Another reviewer bemoaned "the service" - I found it to be as great as ever. Marci was behind the counter today and was as positive and great as ever! (Marci & Larry Redding opened the Lunchbox three decades ago...)
finally, there's a reason the line goes out the door - on a...
