I want to start this review off by firmly stating that for about two years, the first two years that I was dating my husband, we would come to moms kitchen every weekend for breakfast. The servers were always pleasant, the food was always hot and delicious, prices, that you absolutely cannot be based on the portion sizes, we always left feeling full and happy. But the hostess. She has always had the nastiest, meanest look on her face, absolutely glowering, and also always acted as if we were inconveniencing her by showing up to eat. The hostess slowly started ruining our time for us, until one day, we came in, and was not seated at a table, but seated at the bar, so that the hostess could seat a single person at a table-she proceeded to visibly flirt with him for several minutes before the waitress came over. I actually felt embarrassed for her, it looked cringey. We walked out, I said to her that we are leaving based on her seating decisions, haven’t been back in years. We tried to go back recently, a few weeks ago, thinking that they definitely had to have fixed the issue that they had before, and missing the small-town feeling of getting breakfast locally. I was very delighted to see that there was a brand new hostess, she was pleasant and seated us quickly, and we waited about 45 minutes with absolutely nobody approaching us, giving us menus, asking us how we’re doing. A busboy saw us, was concerned that we had had no drinks yet, brought us coffee and water. We waited another 10 minutes before we just left. We weren’t acknowledged at all by any of the servers, or the new hostess that I had really high hopes for. We didn’t even pay for the coffee. I really want to like this place, the food is really good, but I just cannot give this place a good endorsement based on these experiences, and I really feel like I should tell people before they try to support small businesses and have another restaurant ruined for them. I don’t know if these people just prefer the older crowd, have an attitude about younger people- I have no idea what the deal is, but I have to start thinking that way, because we are the only people that have this experience, we are also the only people that are under the age of 65 that eat there. Despite really loving the food, really loving the atmosphere, I will never go back there. I’ve just been treated like an absolute subhuman, and it’s infuriating, my husband absolutely loves this food but the chances that we’re going to be treated horribly make us go to fast food chains for...
Read moreDon't judge this book by its mom-and-pop cover. Fresh clams in a light cream sauce over linguini and coconut cream pie highlighted my visit. I went with two friends to this plaza restaurant. Signs posted haphazardly on the wall told customers that all persons in the party must be seated before 6 PM in order to get the early bird special. The tables and chairs are very basic, and the waitresses carry pens and old-school pads. We all ordered dessert: the smooth coconut cream pie, a pecan pie and (for me) heated blueberry pie with fresh cold vanilla ice cream. We passed the pies around counterclockwise. I ended up keeping my friend's coconut cream, and she my blueberry. Not because we didn't like the pies that we ordered, but because we loved so intensely the pies that the other person ordered. The blueberry pie was packed to the gills with small berries. The filling was not overly sweet. The ice cream was the perfect complement to the heated blueberries. The pecan pie was fine, not outstanding but above average. What I really want to talk about is that coconut cream pie. I'm not a huge fan of coconut, and this pie was not overweight in it. The filling was a smooth custard with no extra bits of coconut inside it to clutter up the way. Toasted shaved coconut sat atop the pie, and a healthy layer of whipped cream rested on the edge. This was probably the best coconut cream pie I've ever eaten. As for the main courses, I had the linguine with clam sauce. It came with clams fresh in their shells. The sauce was light and garlicky and cream based. Was not too heavy, not too light. It was just right. I was offered not--so-fresh Parmesan and red pepper flakes. The clams were not at all chewy. The linguine was cooked to perfection. My friend ordered a sausage and marinara pasta dish. The sausage was sweet Italian, and very tasty. My other friend ordered chili, which I found to be not to flavorful. It was pretty heavy. My other negative comments would address the side salads that came with our meal: basically shreds of lettuce, and three small cherry tomatoes sat atop the leaves. My blue cheese dressing did not taste completely fresh. If you are looking for ambience, this is not the place. The clientele is older. It's the kind of place you go with your parents or your grandparents. It doesn't have that hip or artistic vibe of Howleys in West Palm Beach. If, however, you are looking for a good meal ended with a good homemade dessert, this is the place to go. Oh, and get there before six if you want the early...
Read moreLast night, my fiancee and I wandered into a little restaurant that we have driven past many times before, and kept saying, "I wonder what that place is like."
When we drove up, the place seemed a little unassuming, but what the heck, may as well walk in and see what it was like. We opened the door to a small, wonderful step back into a time where mom and pop establishments were the norm before corporate America took over the food industry and sold us on the idea of eating in huge, over-lit, loud eateries.
The minute we walked in, we were greeted by laughing, smiling servers and host. It was just the 2 of us and we were invited to pick our own table. Excellent! We picked a little two top where we could spend our date night just enjoying each other, the food, and the quiet atmosphere.
It felt like we were invited into someone's home.
Opening the menu was interesting! So many varied, homestyle meals! But their menu board proclaimed lamb chops, and I am a sucker for lamb. My fiancee chose the liver and onions.
Eating the food- Have you ever taken a bite of something and it just transports you to a time and place where you were your happiest self? That is what this place does. They served us homestyle, delicious food that brought us to our own happy, beloved food memories. My lamb chops were lightly seasoned with salt, but nicely seasoned with rosemary. My only nit-pick is that they were overcooked because they are sliced off the rack into single bone chops. Easily remedied if I ordered them rare instead of mid-rare. Then the meat wouldn't have continued to cook while resting on the plate. I will do that next time I need a nice lamb chop meal at a good price (only 22 dollars for a beautiful home cooked lamb chop meal!) My fiancée's liver and onions gave him good memories of his own mother's liver and onions from his childhood in England. What a beautiful thing to experience!
After the dinner, we didn't want to leave. So we ordered pie and coffee. Pie. Mom's Kitchen has PIE! So few places offer a nice piece of pie, any more. It is quite possible that I got tears in my eyes as I nibbled my piece of pie, because it made me miss my Godmother.
All in all, of you are wanting to find a place where you will feel like you are eating in someone's home, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and respected, and a meal that will transport you to a kitchen where love is the "special ingredient", visit Mom's Kitchen. You will end up planning your next visit before you finish your...
