I am a huge sushi fan and have been to many sushi and Thai establishments over the years.
I've been to Thai Samurai several times since moving to the area in January. The food has been very good almost every time. I like to try new dishes and tried their Tuna Tartar served on crispy wantons some weeks back and fell for it, but the last time I ordered it To-Go, and it wasn't good - I was really disappointed.
I also called to let them know that it didn't seem to be made the same way, (maybe it was a different cook I didn't know) they apologized but you know, you start to wonder what is happening - (and I admit that I was reluctant to go back...)
However, I did go back tonight.
Now to be fair, I understand that Covid has made things difficult and restaurants can be short staffed - Thai Samurai seems to have just one cook - and it is a small place and that's ok, it's also why I went a little early but uh-oh, unfortunately my server sat me but then sat people that came in some time after me and I sat there and watched while she went on to serve them drinks and even food before she ever came to my table (?)
I was just about ready to get up and leave - BUT she got over to me and when I mentioned it, she apologized and then went out of her way to make it right.
The dish I selected came with soup and salad, so she got that out to me right away and I have to say both were delicious. The ginger dressing is amazing. The miso soup has body and is the most flavorful Miso I've ever had.
Perhaps she spoke with the chef, because she didn't skip a beat after that.
I tried the poke bowl tonight and it was outstanding. Fresh and abundant portions. Everything I hoped it would be and enough food in the one bowl to not be able to finish the Mexican roll that I took home.
If you can be patient and understand it's a small place with a few on staff - the food is totally worth it.
EDIT: Returned and liked that Poke so much I ordered it again and this time it was enormously disappointing and when I asked why it was different, different vegetables and less of them, missing crabmeat, I was told different chefs make it different ways - except for things like rolls which are on the menu.
Well, so is the Poke. It is on the menu too and typically when you frequent a restaurant, you expect them to make their dishes the same way. I didn't order Sashimi or Chefs Choice. I ordered Poke and expected Poke. I'm more than disappointed now. I'm going back to Samurai Blue. That has never happened there - and it's worth the drive...
Read moreFrom the moment my partner and I walked in until we left, we were totally impressed. The decor and ambiance is beautiful, the server we had was polite, quick, and attentive, and the food was phenomenal!!! We ordered the wonton soup for an appetizer and WOW! It has to be my favorite thing so far. There were little chunks of fresh garlic that you could actually see in the soup -- so delicious. The jasmine tea is nice, as well. For dinner, he ordered the pad Thai and I ordered pad se ew -- both were awesome. The plates all come with a "spicy plate" which has sauces you can add to make your dish hotter, if you wish. One jar has red pepper, another has jalapeños, one has a great smoky and savory tomato paste based (?) spice, and the fourth has a pepper infused oil, which isn't too spicy and has a nice flavor. There are five different levels of hotness that you can choose from for your dish: mild, medium, hot, Thai hot, and super Thai hot. My boyfriend is Mexican and I love spicy food, and we both ordered our food just hot -- just in case. Good thing, too! The hot is definitely hot enough to make you take a sip of water and will clear your sinuses. ;) For dessert we tried the fried donuts and the coconut ice cream with fried banana coins. The donuts are good, but the real star was the ice cream! It is sprinkled with sesame seeds and drizzled with honey -- it's delicious! Very light, not too sweet, and the flavors really work well together. The banana coins are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and they taste very good with the coconut ice cream. My boyfriend said to include that everything seemed very fresh, had a great flavor, and there was lots of variety. He also agreed that the waitress was wonderful. This will definitely be a repeat...
Read moreCame in with my wife to celebrate Father's Day, looking for some good Thai food, and became moderately excited by reading a few of the reviews. We ordered the red and green curry chicken lunch specials, which came with soup of the day (rice and spinach soup) and the appetizer of the day (fried gyoza with glaze), as well as ordering Tom Yum Chicken and Tom Kha Chicken soup bowls to eat before the entrees. The gyoza and the rice soup came first, and were delicious. I especially love the chicken broth with chopped garlic which provided some fantastic savory flavor. Not long after, the Tom Kha and the Tom Yum came out, and their flavors did not disappoint. Aside from needing to cut the chicken and vegetables in my soup with my spoon before every bite, I thought it was delicious. Up until this moment, just about everything in this experience was great.
But then our Curry came to the table, and it immediately looked different than what we were expecting. It was a thicker, oilier, and oddly colored version of the red and green currys that we usually ate at other restaurants and at home. My wife's comment on its consistency is pretty spot on, that it reminds her of 'gravy'. The flavor was off too, enough that we knew that we wouldn't be able enjoy this meal if we ate it. I definitely wouldn't call this authentic flavor. This doesn't happen too often, but we requested a refund on the two curry dishes, and we also were sure to give a good tip off the original total to the patient waitress that helped to make us happy.
TL;DR - would recommend the fried gyoza, the rice and spinach soup, the Tom Kha and the Tom Yum. Service is good. Would not recommend any...
