How can you mess up wings? Tune in and find out!
We are in town visiting from Dallas, and I would consider myself a wing connoisseur of sorts. So for dinner we decided to find the " best wings" in Tampa. So a half Hour drive and we found ourselves in front of this place.
I am a strong believer of not judging a book by its cover so I looked past how dirty this placed looked on the outside. There was a fairly decent crowd so I thought that was a good sign. I walked up and was greeted by a pretty snobby worker, no personality and just seemed to not want to be there, but I ordered 35 wings and fries and went back to my car to wait for my order.
It took about 8 minutes for my wings to come out and I was really suprised at how quickly they got me my food. I ordered 15 spicy lemon pepper, 10 garlic parmesan , and 10 spicy butter garlic. With a side order of fries. It all smelled pretty good, so my girlfriend and I took off to look for a nice park to enjoy our dinner ( y'alls park selections are pretty terrible , but that's a story for a later time lol ).
So after finding a place we dug in and.......we were highly disappointed. My first bite of the butter garlic ones tasted only like fish. Although it was crispy and juicy the flavor was definitely overpowered by the oil it was cooked in. I said screw it maybe its just this flavor so I took a bite out of a garlic parmesan and all it tastes like was oil and garlic...yum? Nah. The spicy lemon pepper were pretty good and the French fries were nothing to write home about. We ate about 5 wings each and then threw about 25 wings away. Super disappointed. This place is overrated , and overhyped. Maybe its better and I just came at a bad time? But I guess if you want fish flaovred wings this is your spot! Me? I guess my tastebuds aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate fishy chicken lol.
TLDR You ruin wings by having them...
Read moreA nice small building off the side of the road. Easy enough to get to. The order process was simple. I ordered tenders and asked them to be tossed in my choice of the wing sauce, which was no problem, they said. I went with spicy honey BBQ. My friend ordered the garlic teriyaki wings. Each came with fries and a drink. We both love onion rings and wanted to try those, too. The fries were mildly crispy with a nice cook but single fried. They added a generous amount of seasoning, which went beyond just standard salt, would almost call it a cajun seasoning, very good. The onion rings were beer battered and cooked perfectly. They had a very good flavor. The only reason I gave four stars was because the chicken was a little overcooked. The chicken strips had a perfectly right breading that crisped well and added a great texture to the chicken without being bready. The additional cook time on the chicken dried the meat a little and toughened it a little. The wings, though, were cooked just right. There was enough for 3 meals with the extra side onion rings for a light eater. Even the standard 5 piece combo would fill most eaters, I am sure. With drinks and the extra onion rings, the total was 33. There are a few picnic tables for sitting outside only. Overall, would...
Read moreThe wings are solid. They're very uniform in size, probably a larger medium size and the flats include the tip. Mine were fried very hard and fully cooked, which is great because they are engineered for take-out eating later. The hard fry keeps them from getting soggy during transport. I'll gladly take a dry wing over an under-cooked one any day anyway.
They list way too many sauces on the sign to parse quickly. It should be organized into mother sauce, then modifier (ie, "Teriyaki, [Spicy; garlic]" and instead they list Teriyaki, Spicy Teriyaki, Garlic Teriyaki and Spicy Garlic Teriyaki). Also despite stating they had Jamaican food too, there was no jerk flavor but they did have beef patties.
The menu has shrimp and salad and other stuff but I doubt you're going to Wing King for the delicious ceasar salad. Stick to the basics.
The combo for 10 wings, small fries and a soda can for $9.99 is a good deal. The fries were frozen but fresh cooked and seasoned as well. The pool of sauce at the bottom was nice to dip my fries into. As a testament to their cookery, the last wing I ate, which had spent the whole meal swimming in sauce, was crispy and hot. If you have a wing craving, this is a fine spot for a quick...
