This was my first experience with using Helfer's bakery, and needless to say, I am a very dissatisfied customer.. I purchased a birthday cake for my daughter's 10th birthday, which was $51.xx, however, I thought the cost would be well worth it based off of the reviews I had read and the expectations that had been set.. But the end result was much less than what I anticipated. I spent a great deal of time going through the cake book and explaining what I was to have designed on my daughters cake (which her theme was purple and black leopard print).. And I was very specific in the details, all the way down to the color of the icing and where I wanted her writing on her cake.. When I arrived to pick up her cake, 30 minutes after the time noted on my order, my cake was wrong.. I was in a back and forth discussion with the actual cake decorator who admitted she made some decisions on her own that she thought would be best (regardless of what I had requested on my cake order), and my daughter who happened to be with me was devastated with the cake she was presented with... The decorator did offer to redesign the cake, but due to time, we needed to leave to get my daughter to her party that was to begin in less than 30 minutes.. The manager, who refused to come to the front to speak with me, only sent messages to me, via the decorator.. I even suggested that she speak with me on the phone while I was in route to the birthday party, but this suggestion was refused and she said she would have the owner, her husband Chris, call me on Monday (all of this transpired on Saturday morning).. So, my daughter literally cried the entire way to her party, devastated about how her birthday cake turned out.. I did speak with Chris this morning about the entire experience, and I also explained to him that I would have been satisfied if they would have even reimbursed me OR offered to give me a credit for the additional amount that I paid for the "specialty order" that was done incorrectly.. All he could do was keep apologizing for the experience and just saying, "I really wish you would have let us remake the cake for you on Saturday". We went around in circles in our conversation for about 20 minutes, and the final resolution was that he send me 2-$5 gift certificates to return ($10).. I have always been a consumer to read reviews on everything I do, whether it be travel, hotel accomodations, vacation packages, etc. And regardless of the service I receive, I NEVER take the time to do a review.. But, this situation took the CAKE.. My resolution for my daughter on Saturday was that I dropped her off at her party and spent the next 1 1/2 hours driving from Sam's to Walmart looking for a simple cake with a purple border.. I bought purple and black icing and decorated the cake myself!! My daughter was ecstatic and surprised to see I was able to "fix" her birthday cake in the end.. But my sacrifice to make her happy caused me to miss out on her birthday party.. Thank you Helfer's bakery for giving me a memory that will last forever for my daughter's...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars as a rating, McArthur's bakery (Lemay Ferry location) would get it!!! had the worst experience there today. The sad reality is that three generations of my family have enjoyed McArthur's. The pastries and treats are amazing! The customer service, not so much.
I called bright and early to price a "belly bump" cake. I specifically asked for the price of having a "belly bump" cake made fora baby shower. Initially, I was told that the price "varies" depending on "a lot" of stuff. I pressed for a price range of a "baby bump" cake, least expensive to most expensive given all of the variables and options.
I was told "they start at $70 and go up to $175" and that it was best to either email a picture of the cake I want to obtain a definitive price or to come into the store.
I opted to go to the store. Long story shortened, at the store, I was told that "baby bump" cakes start at $175 and regular sheet cakes start at $70. I asked to speak with the person who quoted me a starting price of $70. She acknowledged telling me that "cakes" start at $70, just "not the baby bump cakes".
When I called, I specifically asked for the price range of a "baby bump" cake. I have yet to understand why the $70 starting price was even provided to me if it did not apply to the cake that I specifically asked about. It's clear see understood what I meant as sure went into the various cake options.
I'm not moved by paying $175 for a cake. I'm moved by being told one price and getting to the store and being told a different price: one that's more than double the original price. That's not decent business practice.
And to top it off, not one apology was offered! I simply left, drove to Helfers Bakery, and placed my order. McArthur's is much closer to me, yet I will not support dishonest practices or rude service.
I won't be back and neither will my...
Read moreThe cake is life. It's delicious. Wedding consultation is very professional and patient and, did I mention, the cake is so good! I ended up eating the samples and then buying another sample platter to eat at home. Don't judge me; I'm the bride! The wedding consultant is capable of drawing your ideal wedding cake in front of you. She even handcrafted a very beautiful decoration on my cake out of sugar and frosting. You can definitely tell that she knows what she's doing!
Did I mention that I came here after going to a bad experience at Wedding Wonderland? Their cakes were o.k., the fillings were pretty good and the prices were okay too, but the overall experience was beyond meh. The only positive thing I can say about W.W. in comparison to Helfer's is that they have more cake examples/displays that you can walk around and compare and get ideas from. I think that is something Helfer's should consider in the future. The pictures in their wedding booklet were outdated and should be refreshed with new clients. It's best to come there with examples, pictures, and ideas of your own and go from there.
I will definitely be back to taste the pastries in the cases. I would highly...
