This was our first time at Whiskey and Smoke. I had heard about the food and whiskey selection from a few friends. I went with 2 other friends and we sat on the patio as it was a beautiful night and they had live music that we thought would be nice.
The service was good, although a very relaxed approach of not rushing you, which kind of turned into a having to wait a while if you needed anything. Our appetizers of stuffed jalapeños came out quickly however we didn't have any plates, silverware or napkins so when we asked the food runner for them he told the server which in turn took about 4 minutes to get them and she only brought the plates and had to return with the cutlery a minute or two later.
The drinks were good, they have a smoked watermelon mule that was very good, and I would recommend it. We finished our appetizer and it took about 15 minutes after we finished before she came to take our order. We were not in a hurry, so it was fine. The music on the patio was good, but the vocalist was much louder than the rest of the band, and while we did have to speak louder to talk, it wasn't awful at the time. We were not sitting right next to the band, or that would've been miserable. The band took a break about the time our dinner arrived, and we were thankful for that as it would've been hard to speak loudly, hear, and eat. We enjoyed our meals. Two of us had the 6 oz filet, and one had the pecan crusted salmon. One of us had wanted the yellowtail, but apparently, they dont get it in often, and it isn't available regularly, according to our server. IMHO, it shouldn't be on the menu if it's not available 95% of the time.
The steaks were a little overcooked, but not where anyone thought it was worth sending back. The salmon was very sweet. It was cooked well and not dry.
Just as we finished dinner, the band came back, and this time, they made some.adjustments to the speakers and instruments. We couldn't even talk to one another without literally yelling. It was like being at a concert where you have to yell in each other's ears. It was not enjoyable for a dinner conversation. There were other people who were sitting around just enjoying the music in other areas and kids dancing, but if you wanted to converse, it was not conducive.
While we will return for the food we will not be sitting outside if there is a band playing. I think if management installed speakers along the awnings on the boardwalk and bands could plug into them instead of having freestanding speakers by the band where they are trying to make sure both ends of the boardwalk can hear so they turn it all the way up, it would be much...
Read moreEvery local is desperate for someone to get it right at the Riverwalk. Went with a friend tonight with high hopes that this would be a great addition to our FloMo rotation. It was not horrible, but we won’t go back — unless they make some improvements to the menu and the vibe.
Atmosphere- they didn’t change much of anything at all from the Mexican restaurant that resided before— I understand cutting costs- but give me something that makes me feel different when I walk in. We sat down and I almost felt like I should be ordering the taco salad … but then remembered I was at a new restaurant.
The lighting is low- which is my favorite- but maybe have some lamps on the tables so people can see to read the menu.
They had live music for about 45 minutes. He is a fantastic talent and, to be honest, without him- the entire experience would have been a bust. He could probably draw in a dancing crowd - so long as his girlfriend would allow it- and the space would permit.
The food— no thank you. Not disgusting for sure- but absolutely not anything my family will crave. Especially for the price. I got the brisket- 1/2 lb. Which is more like 1/4 fat and 1/4 meat. Nothing tasted smokey or smelled smokey at the restaurant. You also order sides a la carte. So it’s not like a 1 meat plate or 2 meat plate. My friend got lollipop wings which were not bad at all!! I tried them and we both really enjoyed the flavor! I don’t know why I expected the street corn to not be on the Cobb— but it was messy and just missed the mark— but it’s so close to being my favorite thing— if Taco Ochos street corn mixed with this street corn- it would be perfect!
The service was … meh. At first it was great but then it took forever to get a check and I hate paying $50/ person and putting my own food in to go boxes. Also- why can’t we have real dinner napkins? Or wet naps with bbq wings? I don’t expect Dickeys to box my food to go, but I think the pricing here demands the highest caliber of service. No one even offered dessert so we didn’t think about it til we left.
This place seems like it’s having a bit of an identity crisis. Is it Dickeys? Is it Hard 8? Is it Bartonville Meat Market? Is it fancy or is it laid back. We couldn’t tell.
Came here for dinner to see the new addition to the Riverwalk, and while it is promising, I think there is still some work. It may be I am not the target demographic. When we arrived, we waited several minutes at the front "please wait to be seated" desk with a few other groups. No one was at the desk. Eventually a waiter came by and got the groups seated. The wait staff is friendly, but seems new, and service was sometimes a little slow. The menu is BBQ focused, as you would expect, and at first glance a little pricey.
I got 1/4 lb brisket + 1/4 lb peppercorn sausage with a side salad. My spouse got brisket and turkey.with potato salad. Both plates came with a pretty pepper infused scone. The food temperature was lukewarm, just above room temperature, and was pretty cool by the time we were done eating. There is a choice of BBQ sauces, and interestingly the "house made BBQ sauce" was a white sauce, which was a surprise. I preferred the "Signature Bourbon BBQ" sauce, which was more traditional. The brisket seemed fancy, but was a little dry, although it had a very thick "river" of solid fat running through the center. I would have preferred a more distributed marbling or higher temperature which might have resulted in more juiciness.
I was surprised to see they had no draft beer choices (only bottles), and only a very few wine choices. There is an extensive list of bourbons and cocktails, which shouldn't be surprising given the name. In general I got the impression the restaurant and bar caters more to the cocktail crowd. We ate on a Tuesday night (about 7:30-8:30) and the restaurant was only maybe 30% full. The bar seemed maybe 75% full.
In the end the total bill before tip was a little over $50 for two people with 1/2 lb meat each, plus a single side each and a single bottle of Shiner Bock between us. Not quite as pricey as the menu first seemed (which prices meat by the pound), and really pretty reasonable when compared to nicer BBQ places...
