China Wok — Restaurant in Fort Collins

We tried China Wok going in with no expectations and quickly found out our expectations were too high.

When it comes to Chinese food, we would normally eat at Hunan of Fort Collins, but they didn't have the roast pork I was craving. I checked the prices online, and China Wok's prices looked comparable, the reviews seemed reasonable, and it was close to home. I failed to pay attention to the portion sizes. China Wok's prices per pint were actually comparable to Hunan's quart prices. That was my mistake.

I arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes after I ordered. The service was quick and polite, hence the extra star. We only live several minutes from the restaurant, but by the time I got home, most of the food was barely warm. I'm definitely not a fan of cheese wontons reheated in the microwave. Speaking of which, not only were they barely warm, but they were also gooey and gummy as well. That was a far cry from the crisp crab rangoons from Hunan of Fort Collins.

The beef lo mein held its temperature the best, but that was the high point. The few pieces of meat that were included with the lo mein were spongey and had an odd, bland taste. Maybe some people like it that way, but I'm not one of them.

The sesame chicken was a new low. Again, the taste was bland. Maybe we've just always been spoiled by the incredible sesame chicken at Saigon Grill. China Wok's version of sesame chicken, and I'm still wondering about the chicken part, was at least made out of some kind of meat. It was possibly chicken loaf of some sort. Maybe that's another way of preparing it, but Saigon Grill has clearly set a high bar for sesame chicken.

I was holding out hope for the roast pork appetizer. My hopes were quickly smashed on the rocks. The roast pork was rubbery and, again, lukewarm. Trying to chew some of the pieces was what I would imagine it's like to pull an old piece of gum from the bottom of a table, pop it in your mouth and chomp down.

The pork fried rice was beyond disappointing. The roast pork was microscopically diced. I never imagined I would be eating pieces of pork cut smaller than the peas and carrots. Again, the fried rice was barely warm and shockingly dry. It could just be me. Some people could prefer it that way.

When it came to the egg drop soup, I figured there's no way to screw that up. I was wrong. Once again, the soup was barely tepid and lacked any real flavor. The wonton strips provided in a separate bag also lacked any desirable flavor. It made me start to miss MSG.

We ordered dinner for 5, there was barely enough to feed 3. If your goal is weight loss at a high price, then I would recommend China Wok. To match the food portions from Hunan, the price at China Wok would easily be 50% higher.

After a $50 meal at Hunan or Saigon Grill, we're usually stuffed and have leftovers for another few meals. For the same price at China Wok, if we would have wanted to continue eating, which we didn't, it wasn't close to enough for one meal.

We tried it. We thought what could be the worst that could happen. We sadly found out. Here I am a few hours later, and I still can't get the weird aftertaste out of my mouth. If I manage to keep the food down through the night, I will be pleasantly surprised. It's already made a few nearly successful attempts to escape.
