I think Slyce has some of the best pizza in the area. The Mac'n'cheese pizza is legit, the artichoke pesto is a staple on Sunday nights in my family. We order a pizza from Slyce at least twice a month, if not 4 or 5 times each month. Our family loves it.
However, I recently went in to get slices and had one of the weirdest interactions. I had family in town and wanted to show off how good our local pizza place was. When we went to the counter on a Sunday at noon, there were only a few options out that had been obviously sitting for awhile. No worries, they reheat and the health code states you can have pizza out for 2 hours before tossing it. What made me shudder was when the girl serving us at the counter used her hands to grab our slices and put them in the oven to reheat. Bare hands. Ok. When was the last time you washed those puppies? Was it after you had handled money? I thought, "maybe she'll use tongs when she pulls those slices out of the oven. No biggie." I was wrong. She bare-handed the slices directly out of the oven too. Gross. And then, during our meal I watched her take cash from other customers without washing her hands and give slices to small children. Uhhh... this is gross and REALLY bad practice. I thought to myself, the manager is in the back. He typically uses tongs when he handles pizza, maybe he just doesn't know that his employee is doing this. So, I went to let him know. This is where the 1-star comes in. He doesn't care. When I told him what happened he responded with, "ok thanks," and a totally flat-affect. No, I'm so sorry. No, yikes, that's really bad. No, I'll talk with her. Just, "ok," and then turned away. It made me really sad. It made me really question their practices. What if someone with a compromised immune system came in? She could cause them some serious issues. There are children that eat there all the time. Use tongs. Its really not that difficult. And if you want to keep customers around, take their...
Read moreI was introduced to Slyce about 4 years ago when you could get a 20 inch cheese or pepperoni pizza for $16. Their pizzas were amazingly good at that time, always full of toppings and blew away everywhere else in town.
Then I watched as the price for the same 20 inch pizza went up to $20. It was still a great deal and the pizza was still pretty great, so I continued being an almost weekly customer.
Then recently, within the last year, they increased the price of a 20-inch pie by a whopping 50%, jacking it up from $20 to $30. Even for the pizza they were making, this was a bit overpriced and frankly an abhorrent price increase. Another problem I have noticed is a slight bit more inconsistency in the pizzas I was getting. Occasionally one would have too few toppings, with bare crust showing through on significant areas of the pizza. Sometimes the crust itself would have an off taste as if something went wrong with the dough. I notice these things as a longtime eater of MANY Slyce pizzas.
The result is that I get pizza from Slyce a lot less frequently now than I did 2-3 years ago. I've taken more to making my own homemade pizzas and occasionally even try a certain other joint in town which is a nice alternative. It boils down to evaluating what you get for the money. I've noticed some consistency problems and MASSIVE price increases that haven't brought any actual increase in the quality of what used to be $16.
I hope this review stands as a brief history on what Slyce was like over the last 4 years. Things have changed. Their pizza is still good most of the time, but it doesn't demand my business any more for the reasons outlined above. Maybe rich people can tolerate such price increases. I...
Read moreSlyce is an Old Town pizza favorite, voted year after year as a top tier pizza restaurant in Fort Collins. They offer a unique take on NY style pizza - twisting traditional NY style with creative concoctions of pizza flavors including chicken cordon bleu, macaroni and cheese, pineapple barbeque, and Nashville hot chicken among others.
It's location is easy to access, albeit parking can be difficult, and it boasts a casual ambiance perfect for a small pizza parlor.
Their unique pizza creations mean there is generally something new to try anytime you visit. However, the traditionalists need not fret as they still offer traditional pepperoni and cheese pies.
The major downside of Slyce is their pizza prep and ordering setup. They bake a lot of pies in advance for those who want individual slices. Then, when you order, they reheat the slices you want. This results in an overcooked crust which is borderline burnt and a cornicione that is so hard it's inedible. Instead of buying by the slice, I will need to try buying an entire, freshly baked pie to see if the crust sucks as much that way. If they would bake individual slices to order as other establishments do, they would drastically increase quality.
Overall, it's a good pizza restaurant. It stands out for the variety of topping combinations and would make a great place for college kids to eat after a night out. However, there are better options in...
