I love this place. Except today. There was no soap in the restroom when I arrived. I let the hostess know, yet when I left 1.5 hours later there was still no soap. She said she forgot, but on a Saturday night, this should be checked on, yet alone not forgotten considering I saw staff use the restroom while I was eating. Absolutely disgusting. We waited 20 minutes to order, so skipped the appetizer we planned on ordering as well as bar drinks. Our salsa was empty while we ordered, but she didn’t offer more. We didn’t see her til she dropped off our food 20 minutes later, again no offer of salsa. She didn’t come back til we were done with empty plates, and dropped the check off with no attempt at real service. Our food was average but bland. She didn’t bring the side of chicken we ordered, and having never stopped back, we never received. Flavor on food was not nearly as good as normal- rice and beans were just edible, not desirable. I let the hostess know how disappointed I was with our experience, and not only did she not get anyone/ management to address my concerns, she didn’t even apologize or make any attempt to make the situation right. I am extremely disappointed and won’t be recommending them as my go to place for friends and visitors till they regain my trust...

My family has eaten at Montoya’s since the mid 1980s when it first opened at the current location. The food was authentic, well prepared and reasonably priced. Until this evening I’ve never said I ate anything there I didn’t like. They have expanded their menu with new items. I ordered two items I normally like, being their Chile relleno and an enchilada with mole. These are two items that are tried and true. The Chile relleno was well prepared as anticipated and expected. However, the enchilada with mole was horrible. This had nothing to do with the enchilada itself, but the mole sauce. I prepare mole at home and I have ordered theirs many, many times. I know what mole should generally taste like. This mole was very sweet, so sweet that it masked the flavors of the other ingredients. I have eaten mole sauce at many other restaurants. I used to rate theirs as one of the best. My rating now is one of the worst, if not the worst. Have they expanded the menu so much that they’ve quality with their standard fare....

I wanted to update my original review after management responded to it. I still can't recommend this place, but do want to say that it sounds like they may be making changes and trying to address some of the issues I had with my experience. I love seeing businesses that try and care. So, I wish them the best and give them a try and see what you think!

My original 1 star review:

I was shocked to see the number of good reviews for this place! I love Mexican food, but this place was a huge disappointment! My parents had margaritas with ice chunks in them, the salsa literally looked and tasted like petite diced tomatoes right out of the can, and my fajitas were hands down the worst I have ever had. I will never go back! The place also needs a thorough cleaning! The staff was nice but not very attentive. My coke did not get refilled although it was empty halfway through our meal. I don't really like leaving bad reviews, but also don't want you to go and expect a good meal! Maybe it was better in the...

The food was amazing as always. I absolutely love the Machaca, and you can only get it here! My husband got the Bandera Burrito and loved it too. The service is always top notch, and the entire family are some of the best people you'll ever meet. Shonda took care of us and was very nice, helpful, and attentive. We enjoy the cozy atmosphere and the music. If you want authentic Mexican in this area look no further than Soco's! They are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. I have been coming here ever since they opened.

Service - Upon entering, I saw a sign telling me to wait to be seated, so I did. I waited 7 minutes before a server who was rolling silverware told me that I could seat myself anywhere, and then apologized for not having seen me earlier. Then, I only saw her once during my meal. Food - I had the mixed fajitas and a sweet tea. While the chips and salsa were really good, their fajitas were missing something. The beef and chicken were a little bland. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great.

It's reasonable food at a low price, but there's better Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine in the area. I had an a la carte chicken burrito and the Dos Amigos combination plate. The chicken burrito was dry and lacked substantial flavor; it definitely needs hot sauce, queso, or some supplemental sauce. The Dos Amigos enchilada and tamale actually tasted good with their distinct sauces and filings, but the rice and refried beans that came with them were honestly subpar: dry, bland
