I've been coming to famous taco since they opened, as I used to live right around the corner. Some things have changed, which I understand, so we'll start with the slight negatives then move towards the positives.
Very Slight cons: chips and salsa are not free, as they are at most mexican restaurants in the city. It has not always been this way, as they were free when they opened, but now they are not. This I understand, as that's a very easy source of food waste, and this is a very small restaurant. Second, prices have gone up slightly since open, but this again I understand, as they have done well enough for themselves to require a larger crew than at open (in the first days it was a two person operation, now it's closer to 6 or 7 at any given time. I'd rather pay a teeny bit more per plate than have one of my favorite taco spots close up shop.
Amazing pros:
Man, their food quality is excellent. Authentic tacos that really can't be beat on Tuesdays/sundays ($1.50 a pop). Burrito mondays are a fantastic portion of food for 4.99 before dinner time. Their huaraches are delicious, and the special on saturday. And the hot salsa. Oh my. The hot salsa. Both the red and green hot salsas are incredible. I just punish myself with those things because not only are they muy picante, they're also flavorful as hell. The red hot salsa on those pastor tacos is heavenly. I don't drink, but they also have a good imported beer selection for super reasonable prices, and margaritas as well. Their horchata is delicious. Im not sure if the flan and pastel tres leches are made in house, but they are also very good.
Overall, this street taco concept restaurant is a perfect fit for when the taco cravings strike. The menu is more limited than some of the other spots in town (read: no chimichangas, fajitas, or enchiladas) but that's not why you're coming here. It's not fancy, but its delicious, inexpensive, and most importantly (in my opinion) consistent good quality. Definitely worth a try over some of the other spots in town like casa grande.
I took my girl there on our first date years ago, and now we're married and still come back probably twice a week. Never...
Read moreI had the worst experience today at the Famous Taco. I went through the drive thru window and ordered steak tacos and an order of chips and salsa. When I finally made it to the window (10 minutes later) to pay I was given my bag of food. A big sign on the window asks patrons to check their bags before pulling off as they will not give returns if your order is incorrect. I checked my bag and sure enough I was given queso instead of salsa. Since this was no fault of my own and to avoid going back through the drive thru and waiting another 10 minutes I got out of my car and lightly knocked on the drive thru window. An older lady came to the window and I nicely told her I had been given the wrong item. She snatched the queso from me, shut the window and sent up the lady that originally gave me my food. This younger woman rudely told me that I should have gone back through the drive thru window and informed them that my order was incorrect and if I did this again my food will not be given to me. I was very polite up until this very moment. I informed her that I didn't go back through the drive thru since this was no fault of my own. I refused to waste any more time at their drive thru. This very rude younger woman then preceded to tell me that I could lose the attitude. At that point I reminded her that she is the same woman that screwed up my walk in order over a month ago. I guess I struck a nerve because she got really rude with me at this point. I told her that she needs to learn about customer service and how to treat customers and that I will not be back. She then stated that this was fine and that my business isn't wanted or needed there. I absolutely felt racists vibes during this interaction. I got the feeling that she has had bad experiences with a certain race of people in the past was unfortunately for me sparked her outrage today. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT. Very rude people and the food has gone downhill over the months. There are so many other wonderful Mexican restaurants in town that I will patronize moving...

I wandered in dangerously close to closing time but they graciously took my order and allowed me to sit and eat it while they cleaned and prepared for closing. I ordered a pastor and a carnitas taco along with a Mexican Coke. Some of the most authentic Mexican food I've had in a LONG time (since I live on the other side of the world at the moment!). Pastor was nice and sweet from the pineapple. The carnitas didn't pack a lot of flavor but the meat was still good. Of course cilantro and onions on top with a squeeze of lime. Both tacos served on two small corn tortillas - just about perfect size for one hand, and they were generous with the meat!
She offered me their house hot sauce and I opted for the red which she indicated was spicier. It definitely had a kick to it. I was also impressed with the other hot sauces they had at the table.
Menu is simple but that's how authentic Mexican food is - simple so the flavors of each ingredient can shine through. Ambiance is very casual. Mexican music playing and I take it as a good sign when the entire cook crew is singing along to the songs. Highly...
