Peking duck at Teddy Wongs
Service, Atmosphere:
When I first walked into Teddy Wongs, I was immediately surrounded by the various aromas of sesame chicken, steamed dumplings, and fried rice. We were greeted by kind workers and fast service, even with the bustling atmosphere of locals and new customers.
Sitting down with the menu, I already had an idea of what I planned to order. When the waiter came around, despite it being relatively late in the evening, was enthusiastic and polite when talking to customers. The order was quick but not rushed, and so the Peking duck was ordered with great efficiency.
Throughout our meal we were checked on frequently and our cups never got completely empty. The waiter even went as far as to compliment my cat phone case.
Peking duck:
It Took around twenty minutes for the meal to arrive at our table, and it looked and smelled wonderful. Me and my mother had ordered a whole duck between us, so when asked for an extra Hoisin sauce the waiter happily obliged.
When observing the meat and skin of the duck, I noticed two things. The meat was very tender, and the skin was crispy and browned. It was served with Hoisin sauce, Chun Bing (Fresh spring pancakes), and green onion. The Chun Bing was paper thin, stretchy, and steamy as it should be. It was the perfect choice for wrapping the duck and green onion in, giving a bland, but not underwhelming touch to the overall meal.
The sauce had a tangy, sweet, and salty taste. It went well with the savory and fatty taste of the duck, and was nicely complimented by the freshness of the green onion. One of the major factors that differentiate the spring duck from Teddy Wongs to the various other places I’ve had it, is the freshness of the ingredients and the large explosion of flavor on the first bite.
The duck's inner meat was moist and easy to chew. and while the skin was crispy, it had an excess amount of fat underneath, this gave the duck a slightly overwhelming flavor.
Traditionally, duck meat is pumped with air underneath the skin to separate the skin from the fat. It is then roasted in a hot oven, crisping up the skin and rendering the fat. When you render fat, the fat becomes more liquidy, allowing it to be absorbed by the flesh and have the excess fat exit the meat. In this peking duck, there was fat stuck to the skin of the meat, and though this added lots of flavor and moisture to the inner meat, it caused too much fatty flavour to overwhelm the other aspects of the dish.
The duck was overall still a delicious and professional dish, and though i had a couple critiques, the atmosphere of the restaurant and waiters made the meal a...

Read moreBeautiful interior! Definitely NOT a typical Chinese restaurant - thank God! Well dressed tables, large crystal clear wine glasses at each place setting combined with the name (Dumplings & WINE), gives you a sense of anticipation! And the food doesn't let down, nor does the wine menu. And if you would rather have something besides sake, beer, and wine, you are out of luck. But don't lose heart! They have liquor lockers! So BYOB and they will take care of the set ups!
So let's get down to it! Dumplings! So many to choose from and many have a choice of steamed or fried. The Pork soup dumpling is amazing! And yes, there is real soup in there folks! All dumplings come fresh out of the kitchen in their bamboo steam basket and I have loved every one I have tried.
Now don't get upset, but food for your table doesn't necessarily come out at the same time. And it shouldn't! Not in a place like this. Those dumplings are best served right away so they don't get dried out or gluey. And let's move on to the family style offerings. The entrees are large enough to share and the sides are sold separately. My husband ordered the General Tso Chicken and asked for a side of fried rice. The chicken was perfectly fried and sauced well - not soggy! Now let me tell you a secret. I never order fried rice because I have never had fried rice that wasn't flavorless and really dried out. (One time it actually had hard pieces of rice in it!) But NOT THIS PLACE!!! I tasted my husband's fried rice dish and it was amazing! I could taste every item in the dish. The chicken stock, the egg, the peas and carrots, and the rice - it was all there and the rice was fresh and perfectly cooked. Based on the taste, I'm thinking they make it when you order it. Another reason you need to be willing for the food to come out at different times.
Now to the bad news. Do not expect to be able to find a place to park. There are maybe a dozen spots in their parking lot and almost no street parking. Honestly, I just got lucky each time I went and someone was pulling out, so I got a spot. But I would drive around the block for an hour to find a place to park - it's that good!
I hope you give it a try! One other thing, they are not on Open Table, so no easy way to make a...
